Projects 51 Ford F1, my first project!

I have these ss bolts are they strong enough for the suspension? I did a reaserch but didnt find the answer!

No they wont be! Don't use S/S fastenings on suspension. They will work harden and shear. Minimum grade 8 steel bolts for critical components.

Junk Rod, the F1 is looking great. It took me a year or so to finish mine and I'm retired, so you're making great strides. I did not know about the dropped springs that you acquired, I like how that worked out. My F1 is my dailey driver, wouldn't trade it for anything. Great project, subscribed.....

Thanks, i work on the truck every week-end, and since dec 6 i do not work so i have more time to work on it!! the springs are superslides from speedway.

here's a pic of the front suspension installed. The stance is perferct!!!! I have only one problem, i won't be able to turn the wheel!!!! LLOL my tires are too big 30'' so i need smaller tires! But when i look at all the ww on coker.com i'm a bit confused i have 15'' x 6'' wheel... What do i need??

 

For my c notch wich tube diameter i should use? i have a 3.25'' axle tube so 3.5'' or 4''

 

Its been almost 4 years since I built the truck, but if my memory serves me correctly, I used a piece 4" tube that I cut in half. My axle still touches the frame every now and again, when I'm beating on the truck, but I'm sure I push the truck a littler harder than most would. I could have made the notch deeper, but didn't want to get into the bed floor with a giant notch.
As for your tire situation, I'm running a stock small Ford wheel from a late model Crown Vic which is 15x6.125 (3.50" backspace) with a Firestone WWW tire that is a 15X6.70 (28.8" tall). My truck is pretty low and the tires just barely touch the fender when turning the wheel to the steering stops. But with you having a straight axle you may need a narrower wheel, or something with more backspacing.

 

ok cool tomorrow i'll go to the metal shop!! I have the same wheels, 89 vic. I'll see how i'm going to resolve the problem!!

These are real nice old pickups, the 48-52 trucks. I'm really liking the direction you're taking it in too, lowered but not too much. I can appreciate the work you're doing too, as I have had to teach myself a lot of things the same way, by buying the tools and diving in, learning as you go.

Out in the wood on my parents farm is a crumpled up old 48 ford pickup. You're making me wish now I could rewind time and get the owner to just leave it in the barn for me. There are salvageable parts but no chance of restoration.

I'm interested to see where the Flatty ends up, those mills have so much character.

i was working on the c notch, but damn i'm freaking out about cutting my frame!!! I read a good thread about c notch.....

the flatty of the first truck is in the garage, maybe one day ill do a nice rod with it between the rails!!!!

And the second one, i don't know what happened with it!!

 

Is the vertical band saw a good tool to cut 1/8 flat bar, like my box frame piece??? i mean curve cuts.... i was looking it in the classified...

C notch all welded, i had some help from my girl friend finally she's helping me each w-e!!! lol



i bought Canadian hemlock for the bed, it's cheaper than oak, good rot resistance and have a nice wood grain!

 

I have made new cross members, the floor is going to be 2 1/4'' higher than stock


Worked on the bench saw...
i'm not going with the original bed strip.

 

That' how it's going to look like!

 

I had a good deal for 2 glasspack, almost new!

 

And a brand new Dominion Royal winter tire, it was in storage for many years!!!
