Projects I finally made a metal patch that doesn't need filler

Yep, I'm so fucking pissed off I said to my self, "Self - fuck the filler, fuck the rust removal, fuck the sanding, fuck the ISOs, fuck the material bill, and build a damn rat rod"

It's taken nearly 35 years to reach this level of agrivation.
Hopefully ill come back to my senses shortly but damn.

My metal patches don't need filler, either.

Until I weld them in...... then they go all to hell, do what they want, and generally misbehave.

 

Build 100 nice cars and no one cares. Build one r** r** and everyone thinks your an ass hole.

 

I love body filler!! I buy it in 55 gallon drums!! Tried lead but flatten out the tires!! Pete

 

I love the smell of body filler in the morning.

 

I like it also when a welded in patch just need a skim coat of filler .I should know with that 56 buick wagon I am working on.lol.Bruce.

Making lots of scrap today in my fortress of solitude.
But I have pondered this with my some 1800 select on the rocks and have developed a new plan. I will try this with 4 pieces on the hammer form and see if I can make some different scrap tomorrow. wish me luck

This all started because the guy who was there before me rebuilt a 60" wheel well bead and only used one piece bigger than a quarter and that was a chunk of 10 gauge.

When you say "fuck it" all of a sudden you don't need filler. Life gets a whole lot easier and cars get a whole lot uglier

 

My only patch panels that I make that don't need filler end up in the scrap pile. HRP

 

I have learned Plasma Cutters are dangerous with this kind of attitude! LOL. I can't tell you how many times since I got one that I said oh hell, F**K it just cut it off! I hear you brother!

Love 1800! Don"t say "screw it"! That vicky is a treasure! Load that sucker up and drag it over to Flop! This cat is stinkin' awesome! I know we are all on tight budgets here but if you've had this project any length of time, then its time to get this sucker out on the road! I am currently at this stage myself so I feel your pain brother!

 

It's all about tolerance! What kind of crap can you tolerate? how good does it have to be for your government? (government work) I tend to shoot for "perfection" and settle for "fuckit good enough".

 

Hello , Hard wood forms work well to form body lines and shapes . The forms need to be a little smaller , than the desired panel size , and the body lines more pronounced , to give you the right effect on the outside of the panel . Also try a piece of thinner gauge metal as a test piece . Easier to form , and it will let you know the limitation , of what works .
I have been making patch panels for over 25 years , and I still toss them on the scrap pile . Hope this helps . Good Luck , Scotty

 

Those slightly rusty ones are 24 gauge and some weird really extra malleable stuff.

but 24 gauge isnt gonna do much for you once you have to weld it in .

There's nothing that I have access to that's going to bend easier. It just won't do it.

In going to try to do 4 pieces of 18 gauge on the hammer form.

 

Hey 31 get some 20 gauge !! 18 is gonna make you wanna rip your hair out .

That's hammer formed out of 20 gauge




I think you are going to have to make the stretch first on a shot bad then add the tapered line after you are happy with the shape .

Hey,

Is the material your using AKDQ or jus crs sheet? There's a big difference in each of their abilities to be formed into tight, compound shapes!

Try and hunt down some "drawing quality'' material, and I think you'll see why stamping plants, and body panel engineers spec this material for panels that require much stretching and shrinking.

Man, you have no idea on what I've been thru to get some AKDQ sheet.
I don't think I can get it here at close to reasonable prices.

 

Little hammer and dolly work , little buzz thru the planishing hammer and this should be usable. Still going to need some filler

 

18 gauge worked over pretty easy in 3 pieces and a cut.
I need a deep throat shrinker/stretcher for this or more patience.

 

I'd start with a smoother dolly.
