Sir Herbert Samuel is pictured in the white hat; Lawrence is pictured to the left of him, and Emir Abdullah is seen on the right. Library of Congress, Prints & Photographs Division, LC-DIG-ppmsca-19413

My first job was in a body shop in 1960. Cars had rust holes 2 years from new. A lot of our jobs were rust repairs. Rocker panels, patch panels, bondo and black magic. The boss would shoot the complete repaints at closing time, then shut the exhaust fans down and lock the spray booth until morning. The old alkyd enamel was terrible stuff, and he'd come out of the booth with his teeth the color of whatever he shot. Never wore a respirator.
