Is there a difference in size on the crankshafts of a 241 and a 270 Dodge Red Ram Crankshaft?
    Not talking about hi-deck 315s or 325s.
    241>><<270 ONLY
Looking at the interchangeability between engines….
I have heard the thrust journal or rear main are different sizes.
    Looking for clarification.

    thanks

According to Leo Lundquist's "Hemi Engine Data Book", the poly/hemi 241/259/270 engines are the same dimensions, passenger and truck. There are three different forging numbers and likewise, three parts numbers.

    Forging #'s 1402538, 1402625, 167111 (this # is only 6 digits in book)

    Part #'s 1328372 (T) (soft), 1671108 (T) (medium), 1484100 (T) (hard)

    (T) denotes part number that was originally for a truck application

Thank you Hnstray.I had some conflicting reports of the rear or main journals to be different sizes between a 241 and 270.

According to the book, the same main bearing set (1315484 std. size #) fits 241,259,270 Dodge car and truck and Desoto 276/291 engines.

    Hi Jeff,

I think many of the parts are interchangeable. We used many 241 parts on our recent 270 build. Another really good book we used quite often is "The Complete Chrysler Hemi Engine Manual" by Ron Ceridono.

Also Eric and Bob at Hot Heads were very helpful.

    Our Build thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=862612&highlight=32+spitfire

Thanks again on your encouraging emails and please let me know if I can be of anymore help!

These cranks are especially prone to cracking. If buying one, don't pay a lot without verification of the condition.

Crank cracks were mainly because of no damper but trucks usally did have one.

Check the crank for cracks then add a damper from a 318, 383 or 440 neutral balance engine. You either broach the damper to fit the hemi key or use a TR Waters key. Make sure to set the top dead center mark after the change.

I'm with you on those pistons. I got a set of 10-1 Venolias for my 341 Desoto. My neighbor has a 241 Dodge going into a 64 Valiant wagon. He got a 268 degree cam for it along with a 3-duece intake with the 2-bbl GM 4 bolt carbs adapted to it. He left the compression at 7.2-1. I think he will regret not stepping up the compression.

Jeff, the dizzy is a Vertex mag for a tall deck 392" Hemi. I machined a .750"? Spacer that fits between the block & distributor to make it work.

    Kirk Hanning,

That is another sweet Dodge Red Ram! I saw the mag on your motor too. I have a nice old Vetex mag for the small Dodge Hemi on the bench but we decided not to use it on this build because of the modern tach we went with but maybe someday on another build. Maybe a 32 Ford pick-up in my dreams..........of course with another Dodge Red Ram!

We can't forget to mention a rather warm cam from Racer Brown!

Jeff, this will be the first year that I'll be carless at Autorama for some time. It'll be refreshing to be just a bystander for the weekend. I'm confident that we'll cross paths and look forward to meeting you!

We did some measuring on the 330 and 341 Desotos. The 330 is supposed to be 8.5-1 but actually comes out to about 7.9-1. My 341 was listed at 9.25-1, but cam out to about 8.6-1. The 341 had pistons sitting down .012" down the hole. The 10-1 venolias I got for it sit .080" above the deck. That's supposed to be for only a 3/4 point increase. I think the advertised listings were just used to sell the cars.

Given the overall cost of rebuilding these things another $300 for forgings is really a minor increase. Doesn't make much sense to skimp at that point considering how sweet they run with 10:1 c/r.
