HAHA! That's what I was thinking. I thought the finest paper they had was something like 600 back then. Great work Jer!

 

If I remember correctly I think I used worn out 800 grit wet/dry. Well, this adds some more personality. I may install the skirts and load the suspension with about 200 pounds. This should come close to equaling what's left of the weight that will be there.

If they are 15 " on what sort of car can find them?

bobo, the tires are 710/15 4 1/4 WW's. The wheels are '50 Ford. I think I need about 4 more inches to be right.

Car looks great Jer! How low can you go before you have to notch the frame?

 

Well jamcoupe you have guessed right, this is what I'm dealing with now. Jesse says that he didn't C the frame. He also didn't carve up the stock rear X member, he replaced it, which is what I have done. So I think I'm going to get where I need to be with some 2" shackles and a creative remake of the suspension snubber's.

 

Hey jer. How long are the rear shackles you have now? I have some that i saved that came off of the '41 rear end I'm using for my model a. They are about 3.25" eye to eye. They seemed longer to me so i saved them for a rainy day..

I'll donate them to the cause if you can use them just pm your address. This thread has been like a weekly soap opera for me

If both cars make it to the GNRS, you could just ask the muffler shop guys to move a few cars around for a photo shoot.

The word 'OFFICE' has been replaced with '11054.'

This is with the chassis unloaded. It's going to be very tight. I might have gained 1 1/2".

 

You say Jesse said he did not c the frame. Did he have any suspension travel? Looks to me you are going to be down hard on those bump stops to get it the same level as he had it.

No kidding without a C that car is going to riding on the axle at the back to get the same ride height that Jesse had.

 

On my 46 I have of to delete them and it's ok

 

Oh man! I see what you mean jer.

You could probably reverse the eyes and get an inch or 2 that way too. Then the shackles wouldn't have to be so long. .

This is a look at the thinking "back in the day". Getting the look that you wanted wasn't hampered by the obstacle's that we would consider today. Jesse's response to the problem was the multiple shocks that he ran. See post#945. Now we see why.

 

Excellent point! I think that we have much higher standards today than was often the case back then. Some of the most beautiful cars built back in teh day looked like a kindergartner attacked them with a torch when viewed from below!

I had a '70s magazine taking a close look at the Hirohata Merc and they comment about the hack job done on the frame, but those big notches were probably considered high-end craftsmanship at the time.

Personally, I think "make is stiffer!" is an interesting solution to the problem of bottoming out a lot.

 

Jer the way the shackles and springs attach lowering it is a breeze right now. If you want it 3" down from where it is, put shackles on that are 3" longer than what you have.

Word of caution !! Do not let the shackles hang below the wheel..... lots of obstacles on Texas roads that can jump up and hit them if they hang too low. If it still isn't low enough... get the spring de-arched... not as cost effective or as easy as shackles but it may end up taking a combination of the two to get it down safely. I would still hold off until the interior and everything else is installed... ride height should be the last thing on your mind right now.
