Event Coverage Rock'N'Race Reunion Dragway 42 West Salem Ohio

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Don Moyer, Feb 16, 2014.

  1. Hi Guys, sorry I have not been on here but been super busy!

I would like to let you all know that I am going to try my hand at holding an event. This is something that is outside my comfort zone and the risk is high. I have run a couple of events now being the Race Director for Gasser Magazine but I have never taken on the financial end of an event. I have gone to a lot of gasser/nostalgia events and I know what I like and don't like about each. I am going to try and put all the likes into one event!

With that being said, I am taking over an old event and giving it a facelift!

The Rock and Race event has been around for some time now but has been turned into a bracket race with a band. This is going to change. I don't have all the particulars and info right now as this is all new, but here is what I am trying to accomplish!

This will be a 3 day event at the NEW Dragway 42 on Labor Day Weekend. August. 29-31, 2014. The new owners are going all out with the facility. Dragway 42 is well on its way to becoming prominent again! The Rock'N'Race Reunion is going to be a Hot Rod and Gasser Race. The year of make cut off will be 1966. That being said, certain newer cars can participate. These cars must be pre=approved and pre-registered. Examples would be funny cars, front engine dragsters, straight axle gassers, altered wheel base cars etc. There will be bands on Friday and Saturday nights. There will be a show car field and swap meet. There will be camping. The racing will include Gasser handicap, index, and possibly some heads up racing. The Hot Rods will be split into street tire heads up fastest car wins and slick tire handicap. All handicap racing will dial to the tenth. I also want to have a Gasser Group World Finals! Each Gasser group will have a chance to enter 8 of their best cars to compete against the other groups to name the fastest group and the most consistent group! I am also not going to charge any admission for these 8 drivers and their cars from each group as long as they are pre-registered. I think this is a comprehensive list of the gasser groups:

If there are any I forgot please let me know! This show is a work in progress and I invite any and all suggestions to make it a better event for everyone! I did a lot of research and I don't think that I am stepping on any other nostalgia drag races' toes this weekend. I like the fact travel on this weekend folks wont have to go to work on Monday. Dragway 42 has a ton of history, and this event reunites 42 with the cars that made it famous!

Feel free to post vintage pictures from Dragway 42's past!

Rules look great Don! I hope you have some big plans for advertising, because this show has been lost for ads for the last couple years.

  3. where would you advertise?

I am working on the flyer now.

I'm not sure on the cost for ads in the mags that ADVANCE1 said, but it would get some new interest in the event. You might even try handing some out at one of the ECTA Ohio Mile events down in Wilmington. It's worth the trip if you haven't been to one!

If you have some extra flyers, I can take some out to the Jalopy Showdown in May, too.

  8. Oh man !

Can you guys do a "Sunday Sunday Sunday" radio commercial ?

Hello Don, PLEASE have a class for FED/Altered, having run these type of cars for many years I can say that running with door cars simply sucks because of the extra time needed between rounds for towing back, cooling off, refueling, packing chutes and getting the driver strapped back in, we never get that consideration when were in a mixed eliminator, also run separately makes for a better show, if it's done right I know a good turnout can be had as I am speaking for many fellow racers in this class. Please give me your feed back!!!
Thanx Greg, Nostalgic Notions Drag Racing

Don, Dragway 42 is in our backyard. I'm sure I can round up some Rebel Rousers if you need some help with getting the Rock'n'Race back to a must attend event.

  16. I want to thank Gasser Magazine for sponsoring the Gasser Groups World Finals!

Dave from the East Coast Gassers has let me know that they will be competing in the Gasser Groups World Finals! The best part about this is I didn't get the invites out yet! Thank you East Coast Gassers! I can't wait to see who you will be sending!

Will you be letting cars with newer wheels and huge hood scoops attend? Or will you be trying to make it more "Melt-down-ish"? I like the 66 and earlier....keeps most of the cookie cutter mustangs, camaros, and chevelles away

  18. Well, I really like what the guys at the Meltdown have and what they do. I really wish I could make it to their event! It is a good thing that there are 2 great events on the same weekend as in the Meldown Drags and the Blue Suede Cruise. I do get to the Hunnert Heads Up with the Gasser Magazine Gasser Nats North. I love the HAMB Drags and the Jalopy Showdown Drags. I want this event to have a little of each of these events! So yes and no. The modern gassers will RACE in Competition Gas and the old school Gassers will RACE in an index format. Then at the end the winner of each will race against each other!

Nobody has the Gasser Groups World Finals and I think this part of the event will be huge! Bragging rights between all these great organizations!

As far as the hot rod class, we are going to divide it by tires. Street tire cars will race 1/8 mile heads up fastest car wins! Hopefully started by a pretty girl! Insurance will dictate if I can get away with this one! Drag tire cars will race 1/4 handicap.

The car show will be a big part of this event too!

    As well as the bands!

I don't know how expensive it is Don, but you should really look into advertising on the radio....like 31 Vicky said, maybe do an old time "sunday, sunday, sunday!!" type commercial. I forget which show (might have been Funny Car Nats in Marion) did some advertising on radio and I had many guys ask me about it, that normally wouldn't even mention drag racing. Just a thought.......

Sounds good ! I went to the earlier rock n race events and then I stopped going as many did. I want to get there again and will. The bands are just important as the cars. They got a little repetitive and need a fresh up. They need to be edgy and very suede like the cars. Also may want to look at the stage layout to make it more visible and user friendly. Good luck and talk it up here and everywhere. Someone mentioned the Kar Culture magazines they all have an online events schedule if you can get on them. There are also car show schedules on line just google them. Hope it's DRY. Don't forget the burn out contest and any other rebel rousin stuff you can think of!

  26. Some good stuff! What bands would you guys be looking for? I will look into the magazines, great idea! I will be praying it's dry, I am investing alot into this!

This sounds great, I'm hoping for more local/Ohio events to hit this year. It wasn't advertised very well last year beyond the racing, so I passed. August should be perfect for weather.

Excellent! Now if I can just survive the racing season this year up to that point without any major breakage.
