Back in 65 I worked in Building I on the Ford Chassie Design and that is where the Mercury Racing Headquarter was they did not build any 65 Comet Caliante with 427's for Dragracing. Now nothing stopped somebody from going to DST and had one built. Me and my Dragracing partner took a 64 Falcon Sprint to DST and they installed a 9" rear end with T Bolt Trackson Bars on it. DST would do any modification you wanted just pay for it. None of this is thru Ford Motor Company. I question how they got the 427 engine in the Comet W/O Reworking the Shock Towers and a C-6 Trans going under the trans tunnel on the floor pan.
I think it was homemade and I would have to see up close pictures! ~~~AFX DAVE~~~

Steve, my brother was given one by Bill Stroppe himself when he stopped at Bill's shop in long beach , after leaving the docks with 64 b/fx in tow fresh off the boat from hawaii . He spent several hours visiting with Bill .

Gary, don't know if you are on Facebook but this picture was posted stating that it was a Dyno Don Comet....picture was taken at HRP in 1967...I did post on Facebook about the correct history of your Comet.

I just talked to the guy and I am going to look at it. I only live a few miles away. He also told me the car came with Kelsey Hayes rims which are still on the car, shock towers moved back to fit the 427, 9 inch rear end as well. He was told it was supposed to be a production car for the public, thus the single 427 with 410HP.

UPDATE: if anyone wants pictures, let me know. The 5th digit is "A." This car is no prototype. The DSO code is 178177, which is a special code. Could have been a HIPO or changed at the dealer to a HIPO. I have pictures if anyone else wants to see them.

A man 10 miles from me put a 67 Mustang front unibody under a 66 Mustang and installed a 427, it could have been done to that car, wouldn't make it original-but possibly done. It don't look real good either.....Al

    Hi Wayne,
Yes please send or post some pictures. "A" code would be a 225hp 2894bbl motor. Not a HiPo. What transmission and rear end code? Does it have a 9"? What was done to the shock towers?
    Regards,
    Herc

Yes! Please post some pictures! The 6 digit DSO is important...it was definitely "Special Ordered"...Just have to figure out what "package" 8177 is...17 translate to WA. Does the Comet have any lightweight pieces? Or roll bar?

Can you provide any more information on this picture? Location, month- date? Did you know who owned the car ... etc.? I saw this car run at the '67 S/S Nationals as the Jan Cen (?) car. Dick Oldfield maybe? Jan Cen motor or what ... ? Thanks for sharing.

This is the "Jan-Cen Jewel" that Dick Oldfield owned. It became the "Orbiter" after he sold it. I found Jason Oldfield on FB. Dick Oldfield was his uncle. The picture was taken at Jasons grandmothers house right after Dick put a coat of paint on it.Probably early 1967....Jason posted this on FB on the 65 Comet group page.
