I run 2" drop spindles with 2" lowering coils on the front and 3" dropped springs on the back. Have to watch those speed bumps and it will bottom out occasionaly, in other words its just right.

I just flipped the shackles and put in reverse eye leaf springs and with no shocks I'm 1/2" off the bump stop. Bilsteins are waaaay outta my budget so I will use some regular old air shocks, trim the bump stops and see where things sit. It looks fukn great so far. I can't post pics yet w app. Moving on to the front end next weekend.

My Nomad has been slowly but surely getting lower over the last 23 years I've owned it!

What are the pros/cons of stepped A-arms vs. dropped spindles/coils?....

Also, I'd add you can still cut or buy "lowering" springs with the stepped method. Again I like to use genuine old factory stuff if I can. Otherwise your In for more $$

I have the gas tank and trans out in this photo so hopefully the rear will come down a bit once everything is back in.
I have the tank back in but am waiting on a shifter for the trans.

Basic break down of my mess-
Front has 2" drop spindles with about 2 coils cut out of a stock spring. The rear has a 3" lowering block with worn/old 6 cyl leaf springs.

  19. We heated the springs on a five five when I was in high school until the bumper sat on a pack of Lucky's and were still able to get it aligned. I don't recall if anything special had to be done aside from the usual to get it lined back up but I do know that the kid just took it to the alignment shop and all he paid for was a standard alignment if that is any help.

I would think that 3" would work without any major problems and if you ran into any we could figure out a remedy for it. Collectively we are pretty damned smart. ;)

Just for grins here is something tat I learned playing with the Sosch kids' Tri 5s back then. We were more or less at the beginning of speed bumps and they were easier to drive around in racked then setting level.
