I am secretly compiling a list of all the tire sizes of every hamb car...should be completed by 2032.
OK, It seems you guys are interested, so I rolled it out this afternoon & took more pictures, this will have to hold you for a while. to answer a few questions; grill shell is a much modified Dodge. Wheels are 20" flat base, lock ring, #3 Buffaloes. The frame rails are, as I understand it, an Essex '6' Also someone asked, so I've included a picture of the other race car in the garage and some of a 1912 Packard racer I worked on last year.
Neat car, I've got a friend building a Speedster from a nice 32 Chev chassis, and it just looks like a real fun build and driver. That '12 Packard has some serious fuel capacity. Looks like 30 plus gallons?
Pete, you're right, those pedals look spot on. I can see how you had fun building them. What is the steering out of?
Hey Dale Making all the different trans functions work was fun. For those of you who don't know how a "T" trans works, well that's a long story. The steering, while it uses a lot of Franklin parts, is actually a Green Eng. item. They were based out of Dayton Ohio and had a full line of "T" speed equiptment. They even ran a supercharged "T" race car at Indy in the 20's.
Echoes of Beverly Hills board track, Culver Speedway, early Ascot, etc...I think if I look up "craftmanship" in a dictionary, it'll have your name....
Oh ya, just to mess with you guys This is my "TT" truck 327 sbc, th400, '78 f-150 rear, F-1 steering etc . . .etc . . . When the race car is finished, the truck gets a new bed I dreamed up, to haul the sprinter on!
Hey Pete, Care to share with us how you got those clean, happy radiuses on your cowl framing? I'm guessing sand packed and bent around something, but... Also, what material did you use for the sills and the firewall backing hoop?
Chip The big hoop was done on a roller, the small bends I just did with a torch. All of that stuff is 3/4" sq tubing, which is what Harry Miller called out on the blue print ! The sills / flanges / firewall hoop are 14ga. I've had quite a bit of experience with these cars & I try to use the proper materials when I re-do stuff.
Pete, i'm glad to see you interested in early sprint cars because as you know this is where our thing really got started.
When I was about 9, I started going to the Long Beach "T" hill climb with my dad. He wanted me to check out the speedsters that were competing, figuring someday he & I would build me one, which we did. Problem was, across the street from the hill climb, in a vacant field, Bill La Rosa & Joe Leanardo were chasing each other around in circles with their original "T" sprinters. My dad had a hell of a time getting me to look at speedsters on the hill, when there were sprint cars to watch !!!
So Pete were you at the hill climb when the Riverside Special was there on the back of a "T" truck, sounds like you are headed for that look. By the way when Ron Kipling had the Riverside Special I went for a ride with him to Seattle International Raceway in the truck on the 4th of July, what a ride . The truck was so heavy in the back it felt like the front wheels were lifting off the ground. I didn`t care the ride and day was awesome.
Awesome "tow truck"!!! Can't wait to see the sprinter mounted on the back. please keep the progress coming. Frank
This is the rig you're talking about & yes I was there that day ! Some time I'll tell you about the day when I was 16, & I could have bought the whole deal from Floyd Clymer for $1,500
Holy shit Pete, you must have not slept for a month trying to figure out how to buy that. Did you hear Speedy Bill Smith recently bought it for more than ten times that.Oh hindsight kind of sucks sometime.
lol i saw your other post with the correction, but saw this one and thought hell i would have given $10,500 for that rig all day long. lol that thing is sweeeeeet tk
Some other hauler ideas from days gone by, just in case you haven't seen these images / vehicles before. Gary
Dean I'm going to build my own radiator ( with Wayne's help! ) Went by " Harry's " & Vicky is ordering my core. Pete
I have shots of it in the L.A. Roadster show in bare metal but they aren't digital so I, 'll have to have them scanned
