I would love to get some advise from the Model A guys. I want to build an enjoyable driver with a trustworthy rear-end and brakes. I love flatheads but I like sbc horsepower. Not sure exactly how to lower the front but i'm guessing lower front crossmember and dropped axle? Does the front seat need to be lowered or stock?
See post number 10 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=9509670#post9509670 I like Snyders for parts After a high compression head, a fully synchronised transmission is wonderful For brakes I bought new 1940 drums and used 71-76 Chevy Wagon backing plates and self adjusters. I made a dropped floor for the trunk, it drops in. i rebuilt the rear axle, its just fine I used a dropped axle and reversed eye front spring but the wheels hit the underside of the fenders so I had to go back to a stock spring 1935 Ford wire spoke 16" wire wheels with the tires used on the all electric RAV4. The tread is only one inch wider that the original
that's a pretty complete car id leave it but that's me you could probably trade it for a hot rod plenty of those out in cali
There's a floater kit you can get for the mechanical A brakes that is supposed to make a world of difference. That, an overdrive, and maybe some hop up parts for the banger can make a very streetable combination. Add in a nice stance (tires, dropped axle and reversed spring eyes) and some 35 wires, that's all a stocker A coupe needs, to me at least. I do like the one you have pictured, though. Hooray for fenders!
I would love to find a coupe like this, unless you intend to do some serious suspension work, an 8BA will take that car faster than you will be able to control it. Maybe some 16" spokes and hydraulic brakes. I'm using a 53 motor and tranny and a 50 ford rear. That's 4 times the output of the original banger.
I agree, no need to chop it if you ask me. Hop up the Banger, lower it, 16" wire wheels and do some work on the brakes.
Im in the process of putting mine back together. No chop, lowered front, no fenders, hopped up banger, and 16" wheels. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Very nice coupe, good for you! Found this one three years ago and have been waiting for the price to come down but it isnt happening...and I still want it!
Very nice Coupe! Bangers can be fun. Check out Crminal's coupe, maybe some ideas for you there. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=824308
Absolutely juice brakes and 16's!!! Whats the hot ticket to lower these cars ans add brakes? Dropped stock axle and dropped crossmember? Can I have someone drop my axle and do I need 40 spindles to work with 40 brakes? I wonder if it's smart to convert to 12 volt or keep it as is?
To get as low as you can go and still keep the fenders, your front end just needs a drop axle and -maybe- a reverse-eye spring, depending on how far your axle is dropped. No front crossmember mods needed. For the rear, you have a few options. A combination of a lighter spring (a model T rear spring works well), reversed eyes, and shackle choice can all get that rear end 2+ inches lower. To go any lower than that you will have to do something to get that frame out of the way of the axle, most "Z" it if that's the route they want to go. But remember, if you have fenders there are limits. Brakes are very strait forward on these things. '39-48 ford brakes are an easy swap front and rear. You can use your stock front spindles with a little modification to the backing plates and steering arms, or get 39-48 spindles for a direct swap. Rears only require new bolt holes drilled in the backing plates. There's a complete tech on this in the archive section of this site. Oh, and keep the banger! You'd never know how so little power could be so fun... Posted using my Lil' Orphan Annie Secret Society Decoder Pin
To lower the front, you can go a drop axle, reverse eye spring, and 16s will lower it quite a bit. Keep in mind the clearence underneath for the oil pan, wishbones, etc. Im going to use my stock axle for right now and see how it looks. If you have the complete set up for '40 brakes, the spindels will mount to the stock axle. If your wanting to use the stock steering, you will have to use the stock A spindels and buy the adapter kit for the '40 backing plates. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I would switch over to a 12 volt system, so if you want to add aux lights, or a radio you can. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
What I have come across for starters is a dual or single down draft intake and a high compression head. Sent from my HTC One X using H.A.M.B. mobile app
