Great looking Starliner! Fascinated by the clever 1-year design. One would expect that chrome vertical strip running up and over the front to result in a vertical fin, but Ford "twisted" the design and laid the fins horizontal/flat across the trunk. Say what?! Somewhat of an optical illusion when considering the entire front to back transition.

Gotta love TV Tommy Ivo & "Showboat". I worked at South Texas Speed & Kustom in Houston painting T-Shirts with monsters when Tommy came through town with this rig. As the local Host shop for the big names, I got to meet & pit for quite a few legends but I remember Tommy as being a really great guy. No BS, no attitude. He just loved fast cars, having fun and living large. Last I heard he was still kickin'. If so, thanks for the memories bud.

At first I wondered why they built this set ten feet in the air. Then I realized they got to watch Barbara Eden climb a ladder everyday.

It's a very attractive ride in this version. The family 4-door I learned to drive in (6-cyl, 3 on the tree) was somewhat less so. What I remember is when you rested your elbow on the door top it felt like it was about a foot wide. That was some thick door...

I remember building the model of that car as a kid. Aligning all of the exhaust pipes was near impossible.

  16. I had one with the 360hp 352. 3 on the tree w/overdrive. Had a switch on the firewall so when the throttle rod would hit it, the trans would "kick down" into 1-1 high gear. Knob on the dash you would pull out to shift in to overdrive.
What a great car, wish I had it back!

What I remember most about this car coming into our shop was rolling it off the trailer. All four engines had red rubber balls in all the injectors as well as all the exhaust that were tied together in sets with "ball chain" like you'd see with dog tags. The guy steering was outside the car leaning in and was supposed to operate a hand brake lever. When the car (which was one heavy SOB for a racecar) rolled into the shop off the trailer it got moving pretty good and he accidentally grabbed the in/out box instead and popped it into gear. The damned rubber balls were instantly sucked down into the injector tubes and blown out the exhausts...all 32 exhausts! They went flying everywhere and a couple wound around one guy like South American bolos! What a trip.

The real shame was that the NHRA had no idea how to class the car so it wound up as the very first "exhibition" dragster and he was never able to actually race it. Bummer...but what a great piece of engineering and racing history all the same.

I once owned a 60 Ford convertible with the 352 Police Interceptor engine as shown in an earlier post 89734. I wasn't that crazy about the car, maybe it had something to do with my dad owning a 60 Wagon that I took my road test on. Today, I would give my eye teeth for that car or this Skyliner because to me they are now gorgeous compared to what I once considered an ugly duckling. I gather that ugly ducking tale is true huh?

  22. Had a Starliner with the 360hp engine, three-on-the-tree overdrive. And like you would love to have the car back.
