Mark, The car is an Overland Country Club touring, mosty likely from 1917. This model had the up swept rear fenders, and a bussel back turnk that is covered by the folded top. The wire wheels sure make it look nice, this was a nice car in its day. Bob

Nice shot of an Australian roadster UTE but I am not sure of the make. Is it an English Ford?

Tenneeseecouchpotato (post89626) "This photo got my attention. I thought these wagons used structural wood - this appears to be a steel wagon. Was the wood look created by decals? Also, the body crease on the door doesn't appear to match up with the quarter panel."

I was 9 or 10 years old when these were new. I remember the Ford "woodies" from '49/'51 having wood trim attached over an all steel body. No structural purpose. I think Ford went to raised metal/decal covered "wood" in '52 or so. I don't recall ever seeing a Merc wagon of that vintage. Doesn't mean they weren't built. I just don't remember ever seeing one. Haven't thought about these woodies for 50 years or so, so maybe this is all bad memories. Re: the misaligned body lines. Something about that particular car does not look right. Could it be a special built by a contractor to Ford? Could it be Canadian? Something definitely odd there. This post may prompt someone who really knows these car to respond. I'd like to know the answer as well.

Lawrence Welk, Alice Lon, and all the band members with the '57 Dodges, Dodge being his sponsor.

I would guess it's based on an English Morris 10 or 12 from the late thirties

Did Lawrence Welk buy his entertainers these cars or is this just a Dodge sponsor promo? Anybody know?

Looks like the vehicle is a Ambulance/Hearse conversion - It has a raised roof and an extended door on the passenger side - The doors were usually cut down the middle and a section cut from another door welded in - Sometimes they even tried to make things match - As for the woodie stuff I don't do woodies

As evidenced by the ad below, the 49-51 Mercury wagons had a different door contour than the sedans, more a sweep than a dogleg. The wagon in this photo appears to be a coachbuilt car, possible a decommissioned ambulance. Coachbuilders typically used sedans for their conversions rather than station wagons. Why the contour doesn't continue to the rear quarter panel is beyond me. It appears the roof is also raised, which is another giveaway that it's coachbuilt.

  21. I hadn't noticed the raised roof till you mentioned it. I wonder if this might be an Australian model that wasn't available in the USA. I remember seeing an odd looking 1951 Ford Ambulance that was all steel, with a short wheelbase similar to this 51 Merc.

  22. This model Mercury wasn't sold in Australia.

Knowing Lawrence to be tight with a buck, it is more likely that Dodge supplied the cars "for use" by the band members for the current model year and then replaced them with the new models for another year, etc.

I don't think the roof has been raised, more like the side windows dropped down. I want to side with rmt in that this ws a woody "messed with". Passenger car doors and fabbed quarter. The crease might be the result of a minor accident or poor workmanship like the windows.
