A simpler approach would be two crankshafts with one conrod each. Regardless of whether they spin in the same direction or opposite directions, most vibration can be eliminated with a bit of counterweighting.

Sorry but they don't hit the cyl. wall. This design would work fine. Try drawing it up and you will see.

Since that is the engine in the Mathis, I presume it runs and nothing hits.

What about providing some dimensions (bore and stroke as well as conrod length for a start). In most conventional engines the conrod just clears the crankcase mouth when the rod/crank angle is 90 degrees where the rod is acting on the plane of the diameter of the bore.

The twin rods are acting out on a minor chord of the bore which is perhaps 50 or 60 per cent of the diameter, so its hard to see how they could possibly clear the crankcase mouth or the bore unless this is extensively cut away. Perhaps the drawing is just an indication of the arrangement rather than an accurate representation.

    I remain sceptical!

I already checked out the Mathis web page to which this link is directed. A drawing on this site has been posted here as well as the link but that is not a photograph of an actual engine, nor is it usual practice to scale from drawings in conventional engineering practice - a standard annotation on most engineering drawings states 'Do not scale'!! Maybe someone here has access to an actual Mathis engine or has images of these components in the flesh rather than just as a drawing.

It may well be that the actual Mathis boxer engine illustrated had a conventional crank like almost every other such boxer engine such as VW, Subaru and BMW motorcycles down the years. I peronally have owned and run many examples of all three, and presently run a 1981 R65 BMW and a 2500 Subaru Legacy AWD. I am also a practising engineer and restorer familiar with the insides of many engines of differing configurations and ages from Victorian to modern. This is why I am so sceptical of believing a drawing which is nice to look at but not for the purpose of constructing these parts. Maybe none of these engines survive...? How many were built?

Imagine puling up to the motor vehicle inspection station with that!
Sorry sir, but that fan on the windmill could shred a pedestrian's nose, and BTW, your tire tread is below minimum depth.

    Is that a hot-bulb semi-diesel?

Not if you are talking about the bowler hat atop the pipe. The hot bulb needs to be as close to the combustion chamber as possible, to retain heat from one firing stroke to the next. I suspect that it is a silencer.

I've been trying to crystallize something like "Isayoldpunk" (including a better name, perhaps): sort of Bertie Wooster meets Conan the Barbarian meets '90s European political biker. I'm not even sure it's possible.

    Perhaps a dim-bulb semi-cyclecar? :p

All I know is I want to build something like it for a "pit tug". :D

That is a real gem. I love that nobody restored it.

For years I have been promoting the notion of recommissioning early machines as discovered rather than restoration, and recently returned a mid 20s OEC motorcycle to running order with minimal restoration.

    The story is at Marticelli

Oh, beautiful job. I know it takes longer to do it that way but how magnificent. Thanks for sharing that. You can make it run just like a full restoration but still have the caricature of a rescued machine.

Here's some great shots by Stefan Marjoram ( http://www.STEFANMARJORAM.com ) of one of Duncan's modified GNs. We've seen it before. Here it is being reassembled after some engine repair to it's Curtiss OX-5.

Although the Deby is a pretty little car, this one isn't very fast.Think about a '63 Split Window Corvette with a stock 194 cu. in . engine and a Powerglide in it.
