1954 Reims Grand Prix. Fangio (18), Kling (20), Ascari (10) fron row.
Gonzales (2) and Marimon (12) second row.
Bira (46), Hermann (22) in the third Silver Arrow and Hawthorne (6 ) in the third row.
Fangio won with Kling second, Ferrari third, followed by two Maseratis.
Hawthorne's Ferrari blew up on lap 10, him walking back to the pits " picking up hot bits of piston and crankcase... strewn over the road "!!

Mercedes were back with a vengeance, decimating the opposition.

Chris, I think Mercedes annihilated the competition with those streamlined bodies, and the car was just as much better than everybody else without the fenders.

Decimated would have meant they only eliminated a tenth of the competition.

Maybe I should have said that Maserati, and the other open wheeled cars, look to be behind in the styling and technology departments when compared to the Mercedes cars. You are correct that Mercedes was in the minority. As I remember it the ruling body later banned the Mercedes closed wheeled GP cars.

 

I take your point in the etymology of the word, but " decimate " in modern parlance is general understood to mean destroy. Decimate in the true sense is only used in historical context.
At least you New Worlders were never subject to these Roman rules as we Anglo Saxons probably were!!!!!!!

Here's some "Vintage New Zealand shots" I came across.

 

Here's a couple of random shots, from who knows where! Can anyone identify the car in the 2nd picture. Hint, they made motorcycles and guns.

 

Never heard of a B.S.A Automobile but they did make Motorcycles and Guns.

 

BSA (Birmingham Small Arms). A BSA Scout Roadster. Really easy when the pic details are embedded in your picture. But I knew it anyway. Oh well ........

Is it just me or my new computer but in the last two days I have only had two days worth of new posts here on this thread. Can someone respond to me and let me know if it has been slow or if I have some kind of glitch. Thank you.

 

Post #88811 for reference. The colour pic would be about mid 1970s - the most obvious clue is the guy on the corner wearing walk shorts. I think the most modern car in that one is the blue coupe in the middle background - maybe a Capri??
The bottom left photo is New Zealand Avenue, Walton-on-Thames near London, England.
The pic with the very old cars is part of a bigger group, probably taken around 1904 or '05. Note only two have registration plates. From left they are (I think), DeDion Bouton, REO, Star (English), Argyll(Scottish) and a Peugeot.

 

Well 2 days to have 2 days worth of posts is what you get.
However:
Hard to tell with all the different time zones, where I am is some 17 hours ahead of you, but for me, 2 days back at post #88645 on page 4433 is 2 days of material for me. 172 posts. Pretty good I think.
