Hello,
was the frame made wider to line up with the mustang clip? or was the clip made to fit the frame with? Thanks David

 

David, The front of the frame was cut at the firewall and built new with 2x4 tubing with the Mustang clip to that. I think its pretty close to stock frame width. PM me with any measurements you need or questions.

Everyone else, thanks for the kind words. The project is slow going recently, life is getting in the way, but I hope to get banging away on it again soon.

Alright, time to get back on this build! The last year or so, Ive been busy with my Model A but now its time to get the Dodge rolling again. First thing to do now is take on the rest of the cab rust. I want to get the cab completely repaired and in primer before moving onto anything else.

I started with the floors. I didnt like the way I had built them so I tipped the cab on its nose to have a look at what it looked like. It was a lot uglier than I remembered, haha.




I decided to cut it all out and start over





I built a new rear cab support but forgot to take pics. A simple piece that I bent up in the brake and shrunk slightly to get the contour.


I then built a floor structure


and a quick mockup to be sure I was in the right spot with my body mounts...I lost the picture with the front sheetmetal hung

 

Next was to make the tunnel and floor

All sized up




Bead rolled and welded

 

After the floors were done, it was time to move on to more rusted cab metal. This is the roof where it meets the header panel.





As you can see it was in very tough shape. I had a few options on what to do with this...try and make a patch panel, shave the roof seam, or find a donor panel. shaving the seam would have been the easiest option, but I really like the look of the seam and feel it looks too "street rod" style to shave it. After searching for quite a while, I found a Hamber (ozzies 57) who was willing to cut me a roof panel. I also bought a mint grille from him! Thanks Brian!

So I decided, since I'm cutting and welding the roof anyway, why not chop it! So I marked out 2 1/2"


and made the cut

The back of the cab looks lumpy in this last pic. It is not welded yet.


Thats where I'm at currently. I will be tig welding it all together starting Sunday. Will keep you guys posted!

 

Just found this thread and just had to say that's a great looking truck! Amazing job on the rust repair and the chop.. Any new progress?

Is that an old Hudson Jet in the background of this picture?

This thread rocks. I'm currently building a 1940 Plymouth pickup custom that has a similar ride height to yours and is mopar powered - love it.

 

Rusty1 is right, it is a 50 Ford in the background. Not much progress recently with the holidays but getting back at it this week. I have quite a few hours of welding ahead of me.

Thanks Chaddilac! I only took 2 1/2" out, was looking for the subtle look. I dont care for the look of a heavy chop on a full fendered truck...less is more

Dropping a stroked 318 (up to 402) in our '46 pickup and wondering what headers fit.
