yummie...I love those full fendered coupes!!

well, my roadster is not period correct...got a hopped up Merc Flathead with old Fenton intake and heads, Ross pistons and so on. But a C-4 trans and a 8" Ford rear axle. disc Brakes up front - it's hard to find the real old parts here...but it sits nice, yes.

Got about 6500$ in it and lots of hours dragging shit home, but the plus side is I've got enough pieces to build another just like it.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I think technically it is.

I could be wrong too, but In my opinion, a "Av8" is a Model A with a v8 in it, since they ALL came with 4 bangers..

I agree. An A frame is a must for an Av8. 32 frame takes it from Av8 to hot rod.

  15. I thought that was the case. They sure look good on a deuce frame though!

Really! so an AV8 is not a hot rod? Humm

  18. they are not mutually exclusive, an AV8 is a hotrod. but so are a lot of other cars. A hot rod has a loose definition, but an AV8 is very specific. V8 motor in an A frame and body

I guess Bud Bryan had it all wrong...

Growing up in the 70's, this is what I always thought of when I heard AV8.

  21. Same with me in the '60s. I think I've got a Hot Rod mag hiding somewhere that defines an AV8 as a Model A with a flathead V8. I don't remember anything about chassis specifications. It was a lot easier to take a (lighter) A body and slap it on a later chassis that already had an eight in it. Maybe some areas of the country had a more restrictive viewpoint, but I don't think it's a universal view.

Well, Neal, I guess I'm wrong on this point of hot-rod accuracy. It always seemed so simple and clear years ago, but that was in the '50s.

I think the strictly purist A-V8 is a stock model A with a V8 engine. That means an A frame. Nothing else.

But I have seen -32 framed cars be called A-V8s in the late 1940's with just a body swap. They are registrered as a 1932 model, though. So, I guess that a model A body with a 1932 chassie is ok to be called A-V8.

I am not really pure these days and will MAYBE call my two model A roadsters on -32 frames A-V8s. :D

    Do the A-V8 Boogie... :D

So, is a Model A with a V8 other than a flathead (early Rocket, Hemi, Nailhead, etc) with everything else early Ford (tranny, banjo) ONLY considered a hot rod, or could that be in the blurry area of AV8 definition?

Any V8 will do to make it an A-V8. But if you are building a period car up to 1948 style, the ones you mentioned are not possible. I don't know of many more than Cadillac V8s being used in hot rods pre -48. But there might be others that I have missed.

Here is the start of AV8. It is 1930 Tudor.

ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1388006622.345236.jpg AV8? Model A Body and frame with V8 Ford upgrades. V8 rear 40'? V8 brakes, V8 wheels. If you were building a car and went to a yard to salvage parts for upgrades from a V8 car. My 2cents! Lots of early V8 stuff was available then. I robbed everything off a 40' Ford with the exception of the front axle. And it's a hvy 32'

Nice looking coupe, dsiddons! You need to turn that 8BA engine in to a hot rod engine now! :)

It's got a Merc Crank and 3/4 Isky cam. What else did you have in mind? Heads and one or two more carbs wouldn't be any improvement.
