I made this dish with my new plannishing hammer and cut it in to the top of the firewall. Its a little sloppy, but bear with me, there's more fine tuning to come.

I wanted to make a nice looking recess for the rest of the firewall with curved edges, so I made this hammerform out of birch.

I attempted to make it out of one piece the first go around. That was pure failure as there was just way to much metal to shrink. The second attempt was done in two pieces and turned out pretty good.

I fine tuned the upper form and tried the upper piece one more time and turned out a pretty respectable product.

time to weld them together and cut it in.

After asking Cody Walls some questions and seeing a video of Fay Butler online, I decided to machine a linear stretching die for my plannishing hammer. It turns flanges pretty nice. I'll need this for the next part.

Very nice build and work. The word hygienic comes to mind. I like the way you think.

    Roughed out the metal finishing...

Tuned down the flange for the transmission tunnel with that linear stretching die I made...

Cut in to existing upper piece, not plannished yet.

As long as you have a welder, the rest of the necessary tools are pretty basic. Wood for forms, hammer, dolly, tin snips. I used the plannishing hammer to speed things up a bit. Get some Ron Covell DVD's. They will really change your mind on what you think your capabilities are. Did for me!

Yeah for sure man, and Windfield's class last year really drove that point home. It really is a matter of putting in the time like you're doing. Most of what you're doing is what I plan for my projects. Keep the updates coming!

Besides top notch tin smithing, your welds are nothing short of amazing, and damned sexy (in the most manly way, of course)!

Lol, thank you. The welds never seem good enough to me, but I'm learning more all the time. Doing pipeline welding the last 6 years has taught me tons about what actually makes a weld proper. Trying to transfer that to TIG welding sheet metal is difficult but the concepts are all the same.

What I should have done, was continue tweaking the firewall, finish the toe boards and trans tunnel. Sometimes I just get bored and need to do something that will get me fired up about the project again. Enter the Hallock windshield. Steve advertised one set of Hallocks, in raw casting form, for cheaper than I had ever see him offer. I couldn't resist, I snatched them up and began the process of finishing them off...
