Technical Just dropped my first axle, Stoked with the outcome!!

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by nailhead29A, Dec 7, 2013.

  1. Been looking at threads regarding dropped axles for ages now, and decided its finally time I took the bull by the horns and tried it out myself. Im building a 28 Tudor and had a Magnum axle which I was going to run, but considering the issues with those axles of late and the fact that the dropped Ford ones just look drop dead gorgeous it was a pretty easy decision to shelve the Magnum and drop an A axle.
I whacked a jig up over a couple of nights at the shed after looking at various ones built here on the HAMB. I made it with bolt on stops which give a drop of 2 1/2 inches but you can bolt on spacers to decrease the drop.
Got me a $30 A axle at the Mcleans Island swap meet, got the big old heating tip out and went at it. Ive gotta say that im pretty bloody happy with the outcome and I couldn't really believe how easy it actually was.
Just dropped another for a rodder up Temuka way this arvo as well, im now hooked haha, anyone down this way want an axle dropped call me cause im addicted!!!

Very cool. I thought you would have to drop both sides at the same time. So only one side gets dropped at a time?

I've always wondered how you get the bend area hot evenly. Rosebud tip I guess.

  19. No im using LPG (natural gas) and Oxy, its alot cheaper than acetylene.

Thanks for the comments as well guys, I will try to get up to the workshop this arvo and take a couple more photos of the jig.

Have you spoken with a certifier about these yet ? I'm just curious what hoops you have to jump through here is all .

Great job man. Good to see you pull the trigger and just do it.

  25. I've watched Nostalgia Sid drop axles in his shop many times. Way cool thing to see!
He bent the steering arms and headlight bracket for our roadster too.
    A real art...
