Thanks everybody for the encouragement, it does mean a lot. Great pics Barry, I love that car, 5 hours(?), now my head really hurts.

This is Allen from CR'S Automotive in town. I dropped off some spotlight parts and asked him, "can you take these apart for plating?" I came back the next day and he had em' all apart, no problem.

Is he replacing the rivets in your Appletons with nrw rivets or small machine screws- where the cones attach to the swivel flange...they're tough to re-chrome because of the small parts!

  4. This really is a great build thanks Jer!!

  5. Jer, each post is more exciting than the one before - closer and closer to the finish. Looks great!!

Barry, two of those images I hadn't seen before! Thanks for posting. Take lots of pics of your new build as I'm sure we'd all like to see that one come together too!

  6. Great effort on this post, lucky today there was a breakdown online at the GM Holden factory In South Australia so I got to wander through this post! Great to see you took on the roof yourself, I spent hours looking at mine and working it all out before I cut it up I could feel your nervous-ness. Hard to figure where to find the centre point of the rear of the roof -everything's round there's no easy lines or points of reference.
Anyway this post got me back in the garage tonight, thanks.

Thanks everybody. Are you seeing the small Phillips head, polished, stainless, machine screws being used in the restoring of these spotlights? I took my machine screws and sanded off the Phillips part and, had them chromed. Now, I can't put a nut on it because of the plating. I can't force a nut on it because its too smooth to be held in a vice.

Here's the parts at the platers.

Looking good Jer! I figured a nice machine screw would work well to replace the Appleton rivets...can't wait to see them reassembled

  9. I don't know if there is enough room on the appletons to use these, but we have used them to replace previously riveted chrome parts to reassemble after plating. They come in stainless and can be polished easily. When installed, they look like the original rivets. These fasteners are 10-32 x 3/8" long (from under the head) and have a 7/16" diameter domed head.

Yeah the little stainless buttonheads are great for replacing factory rivets...I've used a few #6 buttonheads on chopped vent windows when I put them back together.

Why do I (at my age) have to remember how all this stuff goes back together?
