'60 Falcon with a sbc need speedo cable info.

I am building a 1960 Falcon with a small block chevy and a 4 speed out of a 1979 Trans Am. I would like to use the stock speedometer. I do not have a cable for the Ford dash or for the T/A trans. Is there an adapter to use either cable or is one needed? What cable should I try? Thanks

 

what does the falcon speedometer use for threads?

 

A 5/8 fine nut screws on nicely.

 

take a look at pioneer # CA3002 for a 63" cable or CA3004 for a 83"

i bet they will work

 

You can go to Napa with the cable Ends & they can get you one
Check to see if your Cable will bolt up to the Trans
I know when I did Mine that the Head on the Speed is the Same Thread as the GM

Any regular GM cable, of the appropriate length. It is 5/8" on the Falcon speedometer end, and 7/8" on the GM trans. I have a S10 T5 in my '60 Falcon.

 

A 1959 Chev cable works well! You didn't mention which 4 speed, but the Super T10 behind the BBC in my '63 Falcon has a passenger side speedo port, so I needed a long cable. The '59 Chevy cable is the longest I could find, and was about $13 at O'Reillys.

 

Before you button it all up, make a note of the color and tooth count of both the drive and driven speedometer gears. You will need to calibrate via changing these gears, so you will need to know what you started with, to you can correct, via the maths.

I'm just cheap. Possibly frugal, but mostly just cheap (or broke).

Take your Falcon cable - will it reach the GM trans?? Yes, good.

Find a GM cable the fits your trans, length unimportant.

Now, unscrew the Ford trans end from the cable.

Unscrew the GM trans end from It's cable. Place onto a punch, and lightly hammer it smooth, so it will fit over the Ford cable.

Fit it over the Ford cable. Using whatever you have (I use a dimpler), tighten it to the Ford cable.

Install it.

Done. Have a beer on me for the money/trouble/hassle you saved yourself.

Except if he finds a GM cable, of the correct length, he can just install it.

 

That ca3002 is 63 inchs long and ca3004 is 83 inchs long both will work autozone had one is stock for $10 that I used.

 

Yep and the speedometer cable catalog is full of "universal cables" with the correct ends on them already made up the right length for beer change. This isn't one of those "has to be custom made" types of cables.
I think I read where he said he didn't have "any" cable at the moment anyhow.

 

Or cut the Ford cable ass'y & the GM cable ass'y and sleeve them together. Bought a parts store cable ,cut to length. Did mine 15yrs ago and still operating

 

Why?

His setup will accept a regular GM cable. No other work need be done.

His speedometer is 5/8" threaded, and the transmission end is 7/8" threaded.

This is an off-the-shelf GM cable. Just figure out the length, and buy.

You guys are over-thinking this.

 

I did think this would have to be custom made. Thanks to you guys I will now go to Autozone and just pick one up.
