It was 13 years ago that I lost my best friend Clayton Harris. We did a lot of big racing together over the years. JC
Does anyone have a pic of his Moon Burst front engine AA/FD?

 

Sorry for your loss, he was a great racer...this is the only pic I have in my files.

 

I like the way the secured the weight on front, cool stuff.

 

The Snake must have just snapped the butterflies closed. Tires still at full growth, blower belt looks like its got a little slack in it. Powerful image there. What's the story with the AN fitting hanging loose?

Ok, thanks! So the fittings on the heads that look like breathers are for water fill?

 

That wasn't Clayton at the wheel that day. I can't remember it all but this may be when Clayton was recovering from being run over by Charlie Moller in Monteral. The tall guy next to him is Ronny Wheelis. We had a lot of big times too. JC

 

Wasn't Clayton credited with developing the modern clutches that T/F cars use now?

 

Yeah, On our cast iron '92, we would open the drains that were mounted to the bottom of the headers at the turn off before we pushed Pat back to the pits.
When we got to our spot, the water in the block would be gone. Then just before the next pass we would refill the block through those fills.

 

No, We built and ran a pneumatic pressure plate that we hoped would eliminate the centrifugal pressure plate. We made a number of good runs and won a race with it, but, the people that funded us got a little weak in the knees and we had to go back to the conventional style clutch. Our specialty was the clutch. So much of the performance is related to the clutch, I don't care how much power you make, if the clutch can not transfer it to the track you are screwed. JC

didn't his team also run the rear wheels inside-out, bringing the slicks to a point narrower than the headers, about 1987-88?

Must be one of his last passes, Has the vacuum device that's credited with his death. Huge loss to the drag racing world.

Yes, we ran the real narrow rear end 88-94. The idea was that the closer the tires were together the less the left one would unload at the launch. It had it's good and bad points. Our thought pattern was, if you don't think outside the box you will never get out of it. JC

 

went to my first-ever 'real' race at Reading in '87, and after what seemed to be an all-day rain, yours was the I heard & saw go down the track as the sun went down
