Is it just us car guys?

That's why I watch documentaries, they are actually useful information. Too much brain rot involved with most movies, I can't stand to sit for 2 hrs. and feel dumber at the end. I'm already too dumb to begin with and can't afford to loose any more brain cells.

 

I think the green and black computer stuff and lack of mouse is supposed to be Unix or an offshoot.

... But if it is how the heck do they always get pictures to open!

 

Yes, and just about every bird in flight make the unique screech of the Red Tailed Hawk, even in places where that bird doesn't exist.

Some movie stuff is a one-shot mistake, others are constantly repeated:

Guns: Endless racking of shotguns and automatic pistols.

Motorcycles: Two stroke sound effects for Four stroke engines and vice versa.

Cars: Column Gear selectors in Park while the car is "driving".

 

One that got me was in 'Transformers' when the chick looks under the bonnet of the Camaro and see's the 350 with cross ram injection and tells the owner he has a "Double pumper carburettor". Yup, she's an expert!

The "Patton" movie from 1970 is full of these (even showing an M38 in the same scene as an MB or GPW, once). Also tanks, aircraft, etc. wrong. My father used to say that if anyone, even a doctor, spoke to a superior officer the way Hawkeye did in "MASH", he would have faced court-martial.

 

Yes it's us car guys, always nitpicking details. My very first WTF moment was when Terminator 2 came out. In the scene where John Conner and the Terminator are working on the truck in the desert, the Terminator was underneath the truck using an open-end wrench and you could hear the sounds of a ratchet as he was working. I pointed that out to my dad and he was proud of raising a little gearhead!

 

I've always felt that Hollywood aims their crap at people with about a 60 IQ. Those of us with higher IQ go find something else to entertain us. Old junk cars! LOL

 

Lots of you have pointed out things I didn't even think of when I started the thread. I' getting lots of laughs out of the posts. For me personally when I see these mistakes in a show or movie it ranks as such: 3-4 out of 10 on the scale of driving me insane and making me angry, usually I just laugh at most of them so about a 7 out of 10 on the laughable scale. I hope none of you take them too seriously and start "Elvising" the television!

 

Unlike movies, bullets hitting your fuselage sound a lot like a ball peen hammer hitting your fender. No sparks. Just neat little holes and sometimes spattered lead that stings a little. When accompanied by the sight of tracers going by, it is very exciting........

 

Yeah, I can see where that might have a high pucker factor.

 

And when a real bullet goes by close it makes a loud sharp 'CRACK' and not every bullet ricochets and I have Never heard one make that 'P-ting' sound, closest is a low whirring sound.
Another one is cyclic rate of fire! By the number of strikes on the target there would have to be 4 or 5 M134's firing at a rate of 6,000 rounds a minute but there is only one guy there with an AR-15!

one more Vegas complaint. I didn't know what year it was supposed to be so the newer cars did not bother me, but when they showed a bunch of "bikers" with evo style motors on modern choppers I thought it wouldn't take any more effort to put some HD's of the correct era in the show. stupidity or laziness... not sure which it was.

here's one. in a former life I built elevators for a living. nothing I enjoy more than seeing the doors open and someone walk into the empty elevator shaft and fall to their death. one small problem, the door opening mechanism is on the top of the cab, so if the elevator is not on your floor, the doors will not open automatically.

one more... on the old 60's show "the Rifleman" the show takes place 12 years before the rifle the show is all about was made.

 

If you watch the movie 10 commandments watch for car tracks in the charriot race. and this is not a low dollar movie.

 

I might have to start watching shows just to find the screw ups instead of letting them bother me.

 

What cracks me up too is how inadequate the bad guys are with their weapons. A couple of bad guys with Mac 10's can't hit some guy dodging around an area the size of my living room. They're spraying bullets all over the place and manage to hit everything but their target. Lead your target, you idiots!!

I also like when they use a car door for cover. My experience has shown me that even a medium powered round will punch through an old car door (or multiple car doors) as if it were tin foil. If you have to use a car for cover, I would suggest placing the engine block between yourself and whoever is shooting at you.

 

It's more subtle than you think. Hollywood wants realism, but you guys are forgetting, they want to give the audience what the audience believes is true. Everybody knows when a car wrecks it rolls and explodes in a huge ball of flame..

So many things. A gunshot to the shoulder is OK, right, in reality it's one of the worst places to get hit. You can hot wire a modern car, pick a lock with a paper clip, burn rubber on dirt, hit guys with a pistol on a dead run, silencers make gunfire like whispering, you can pull an electrical cable off the wall and do welding with it, endless shifting sounds (Bullitt), all motorcycles sound like 2 strokes or harleys, and so on. Submarines when diving, klaxons sound, the XO yells Dive, Dive Dive, whatever. Dumbest of all IMHO is sound in outer space.

 

Man, I bet you guys go up to little kids and tell them Santa isn't real. These are all great observations and perhaps, a little anal, but movies are entertainment. Unless they specifically say it's a documentary, I cut them a LOT of slack.

I remember coming out of "Armageddon" and over hearing some asshole explain to his kids why astronauts wouldn't have been able to drill on an asteroid. "IT'S A MOVIE! EAT YOUR POPCORN AND SHUT UP!"

 

Mine is that nobody knows how the use a cutting torch. A big old flame with no oxygen turned on.

 

Being a Pontiac man, that was one that really got me.....would it have been any harder to find a nice, new looking '66 than it was to find a nice, new looking '68?

 

My dad was a locomotive engineer for 40+ years, starting in the steam era in the early 40's. Some of the railroad-related things that he saw in movies and TV cracked him up. Speak to a real railroader and he'll tell you that what looks good on the screen often has no basis in reality.

 

And EVERYBODY knows you shoot the bad guy or monster twice! And as usual, they forget to do that no matter how much I warn them.

YES!!!!!. these goofs is really what makes a movie enjoyable for me. I love cheesy movies, of course none of the movies mentioned before could ever be considered cheesy.

special effects are the WORST. I was watching "left behind" the other day at school and there was a part where the president was attacked while going somewhere in a convoy of early 2000's ford explorers. well the first ford explorer was hit by an rpg or something and explodes. somehow the explosion not only completely destroys the vehicle, but also morphs it into a 90's era GMC jimmy station wagon. it is TOO obvious. I said "wow, that ford explorer just turned into a gmc jimmy" and everyone in the class just gave me a strange look, (were prob too busy drawing, texting, or watching porn on their cellular devices to notice)

What gets me is when a magician "cuts a woman in half", and it turns out she's fine.

Seriously, I don't pay much attention to inaccuracies in movies. But there are times when it's just so blatant that it makes you groan. Years ago, I watched an episode of the Waltons called "The Hot Rod". I know, I know...so I like the Waltons...fuck off...lol. Anyway, JimBob is gonna build a hot rod from an old Model A stocker. I was thinking, "Oh, this oughta be pretty good." Nope, it was terrible...absolutely terrible. A modern street rod. I was groaning bad...lol.

Remember "The Fall Guy" with Lee Majors? Not only did his truck survive major damage during long distance jumps......but also changed paint scheme and year during flight. It was all good though........ I watched because of Heather Thomas.

 

I used to repair medical equipment. It's funny to see 25 year old equipment in a modern ER. Or when they rub the defibulator paddles together instead of putting disposable pads on them. They haven't used gel in decades. Or when they give someone CPR. They barely push down hard enough to squish a grape. The heart is in no way being squeezed or moved. You have to use a bit of force to push past the rib cage.

 

I catch all of the car and gun inaccuracies but I don't let it bother me. Like others, even when I notice it I'm only watching it to be entertained.

What grinds my ass though is that EVERY phone that rings sounds like an old AT&T Merlin. Regardless of what the actor is holding in his or her hand we have to listen to that God awful sound. They must give out a file to every graduate of sound school with a file name like "every_phone_in_the_world.mp3" Yep, I'm a phone man.

I actually enjoy watching old scifi movies because of the old special effects. It's fun to figure out how they did it.

 

There's an old thread on that car. It was Buttera built. Four link and all.

And, unfortunately, people have died because someone was doing the TV method. When done properly, it not uncommon to have a rib or two cracked. Hurts, but it's got to be better than the alternative.
