Agree with the translucent wheels looking sharp!
My Grandpa installed a Lincoln translucent wheel a few months after he took delivery summer of 41 - it is still on the old girl - I just dig the way it looks when the sun shines through it.

The translucent look can be done in almost any color. Many moons ago I did an OT blue wheel. OK, it was for a Road Runner. The OEM wheel wasn't as "ghostly" as some of the 40s stuff but it had that look. On that one I did blue pearl over the base interior color. The blue would come out real strong so I was really conservative at 1st. Next I mixed up some candy blue with toner base (transparent) and ran it through the gun without cleaning the pearl remnants out. The blue candy was quite strong so I reduced it about 200% then just kept floating it on there. Even in the booth it looked real dark so I took it outdoors. That rich blue really toned down the pearl effect and it looked almost New Old Stock. There's only 1 'danger' to this approach, and that's rings on your fingers. It will scratch if you're not careful. Sorry, no pics of the blue one...

 

How did the wheel work out? (I made a new account.) Looks good in there BTW. It's a Nova wheel, but the same one was also used on '66 Custom cab pickups. The '60-'65 Custom cabs used the '58-'60 car wheel with the '59-'60 horn ring. (Non-Impala) Lots of fun and interesting facts and interchangeability in the steering wheel world, they are a lot of fun to mess with.

Is the wheel for your Lincoln, or something else? I prefer to have the style of the wheel suit the period and style of the car, like these:

IMO American steering wheels in upmarket cars of the '40s and '50s were often beautiful, especially the ones with cool horn rings. I think there were some nice ones in Fords, Chryslers, and Oldsmobiles, but I'd probably pick the best-looking one I could find that would fit my existing spline.

 

I'm planning on running a 56 premiere wheel in the Lincoln, but the gf wants me to build her a squarebird with a more 60s custom style to it so I've been looking for some ideas

That's the same wheel I am running, just stock size. I like the leather wrap though, that's very cool.

 

I've got a '51 Chevy and I'm going to need to restore the wheel. What is the best product to use to fill the cracks?

 

Oh yea!

 

I used some JB Weld stick putty stuff. I don't remember the name of if, but you cut it off the stick, nead it till it mixes well, and it is movable and shapeable with a bit of water on your finger tip.

I made this earlier this year for '37 Pickup. I made it to match the shift lever I bought from Limey Steve. Kinda matches. I got the idea from a thread I saw on here written by Metalshapes. Same idea, same procedure just executed slightly different.

banjo style steering wheels seem to fit the era

 

i've made it hard for myself, lol, my three choices:
red and gold will need a paint job, it's from a boat.
the other two just need a clean up.
i'm leaning towards the red/gold one.
