Projects 36 ford custom build (MISS SCARLET)

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by kippers 34, Jul 5, 2013.

  1. Hopefully something along them lines will work. I like glass lenses and if I could get a really deep red that would be sweet as hell.

  2. Worked on the bumper a little more today. I added mounting tabs inside the guards to attach the mounting plate/light housing back plate.

Then I lined up and leveled the guards and tacked them to the bumper so I could drill and bolt the back plates to the bumper. I also drilled and bolted the lisence guard to the bumper.

The bumper and guards are reinstalled and ready for glass and buckets.

that has a great profile - great job

  5. Then I started to remount the trunk lid. Some dumb ass decided to make her a rumble seat so they ripped the hinge mounting plates from the car.
So I straightened the mounting brackets and reattached them to the trunk gutter lip. Then I made a reinforceing and mounting bracket.

Then I installed the bracket welding it to the trunk brace and bolting it to the hinge bracket. Later I will ad another tab to attach the roll up rear window tray to the other side of the reinforceing bracket.

  6. Thanks a lot.

  7. The trunklid had been bent by the support arm and then repaired very crappy so the lid now has a different radius than the body.

I cut the bad weld out and straightend the inner structure then got the repair ready for a patch.

While I was there the hinge mount was cracked on both sides also. So a little welding and grinding was in order.

After everything was ready I installed the deck lid to get the radius to line up then I tacked and welded the repair.

Now the only major part of the body metalwork left is the trunk skin. It needs a patch and made to fit the hole a little better.

Kipp, I'm still intrigued by bumper/tailight treatment. While studying the pictures in post #488, my eye noticed this ugly bumper bolt right beside the the 49 license plate guard. To me it is totally disruptive to the flow of things back there. If you have the same opinion, maybe now is the time to weld in and smooth in those mounting bolts. The same would go for your front bumper. On the Calori coupe the only bolt I noticed was through the bumper guard where the bolt is not so noticeable. But then again, the bumpers need to to be mounted somehow and we all know where babies come from.
No doubt about it, that trunk lid is a mess. I think that considering the condition you found your 36 in, that the previous owners should be arrested for auto abuse!
When I got to this stage I fought to create a trunk opening spring mechanism between the hinges to no avail. I finally resorted to making new brackets to fit the old mounting holes and installed gas struts from a chevy "Tracker". That may violate your traditional criteria but it got the job done nicely for my build.
Best Regards and Good Luck with all your endeavors, KB.

Hey Kipps the coupes looking great. Love the bumper treatment.
I'm following the tail light install with interest as I eventually want to take the temporary turn signals off the rear of my zephyr and mount them into the bumper guards.
Hope the glass works out as it really would look better than the plastic in my opinion.

    Paul.

  14. More "twin bar" motif going on...way cool. I agree that the bumper bolts on either side of the license bar need to go bye-bye.

This is coming along so killer Kip! And Jon's going to shoot it? Too cool!

  17. Thanks. Wish I could take credit for the bumper guard taillights but that has to go to nick Matranga on his Baris built 39 merc.
Thanks. Glad to share. Sometimes it's hard to remember to stop and take pictures.
    Thanks a lot.
Thanks. I did consider that if I had to make plastic that I could put a newer lens over a buck in my powder coating oven and let it relax over the buck.
Thank again KB. Yes the bumper bolts will disappear before chrome but I wanted to get everything to fit first. Struts on the deck lid would be nice but you are correct on the period correct part. I have traveled to far down this road to take the easy way out know.
Thanks Paul. I agree the glass lenses just have a warm feel to them that I hope I can make work.
Thank again. Yes the bolts will go away. Much smoother without.

  18. Thanks Guy's. Just got back from the photo shoot. Glover is amazing and all I have seen so far is the display on his camera. I have a couple pic's but I think I will wait till Glover posts his becouse mine don't do his work justice. It will take a couple days cant wait.

  20. Awesome Kipp. Looking forward to see the photos. There´s something special with a car in bare metall and with a proper photo set up it´s better than porn:D

    Wish mine was there.

  21. Thanks.
Thanks Kenneth. Cant wait to see full size pictures. Glover found an old 30's service station a couple hours out of Salt Lake in a teeny town. Back drop and weather were perfect. Yes Kenneth pure car porn.
If you keep the pace you have been moving at you will be there before long. Your car is really starting to take shape.

Awesome build man! You have the eye! I must say I never looked at 41 Ford bumpers before but those are what I'm looking for to run on my Buick. Great car.

  28. Thanks. Don't get any better than a 40's style tail dragger.
Thanks. 41 super deluxe bumpers are the last of the art deco style bumpers.

  29. Almost as good as the build itself! :D

    Both are way-stinkin-cool.
