More on the Doc Eiland/ Bill Stauffer 333 roadster:

Thanks to assistance from Dave McClelland, the owners were able to visit Doc Eiland and Mr. Shreve and we finally have a picture of the Doc Eiland car as it ran, though in an earlier incarnation.
At this time it was running a 303 Olds with a blower - the same motor was in the Shreve sedan - later Doc switched to a later Olds with 6 carbs on a homebuilt log manifold. Bill ran the car with a 265 Chevy bored to 283 with mechanical injection.

Again, if you have further information or pictures of this car, we would love to have it!

  2. To add to the pics that Donnie has uploaded, here are some additional early photo's of the Doc Eiland / Shreeve 333 Altered Roadster. The one with copy came from the 1961 Division 4 Track Guide...the others were shot at either Mansfield, LA, or Pel State in Opelousas, LA. (Thanks to Dave McClelland for finding, and sending these pictures my way)

The engine with the Blower was a 303 Olds (and how I am building the car back), and the carb'ed pics was an Olds 394.

For more on the current status of the car see my intro page:

    Thanks,

What's the difference between an A/R class and the A/A class, and when did the roadster class get eliminated? I keep seeing cars that I would have guessed were altereds and they are designated roadsters.

    Is it the engine setback?

When I was drag racing my Altered coup, roadsters had their own class. If they burned gas they were Roadsters. If they burned fuel they ran in "Hot Roadster" This was in the late 50s until '65. When NHRA combined coups and roadsters they ruined the class.

Thanks. That's why Pure Hell has HR on it when it was still running a Chevy engine. Good to know.

  12. I wasn't around back in the day of high-off-the-ground drag roadsters...or never had an opportunity to drive one....but always loved "the look"

What were they like to drive though? top heavy? squirrely and rollie if they got a bit sideways? Or steady as she goes?

I'm very curious about he high stance road manners.

    RE Altereds vs Roadsters

Roadsters (later classed as Street Roadsters) had to have fenders and a hood and had to be left hand steered. The engine setback was limited - I think to 10%, like Gassers - from the front spindle to the first spark plug.

Altereds did not require fenders or hood and needed only a grille shell. They could be center steered with the drivers legs straddling the driveline and wheelbase alterations were more liberal.

Other minor appearance rules also applied.

Some info on the Carls 222 32 roadster.
The car was built from a mold that Jerry Cogswell made from a real 32 and was campaigned from 1960-69. It ran a best of 10.5 @ 130. The engine was a 375 hp 327 with Mondello heads and TRW pistons. It was setback in the chassis 25% . The car was sponsored by Engle cams and Carls speed shop. This info came from Jerry, and he has a recreation of this car.

  20. Woah, t_wood, what's the story behind that car? Can't leave us hangin' like that!

  21. Pretty sure the little truck bed in the back was for carrying the drivers,
    "huge hevos"!

  22. I'm working on a "Street Roadster"... going for a late 60's vibe.

At one point, guys were running street roadsters with blow fuel motors in them.

    Wild.

Did anyone notice that HUGE chunk of rubber missing from the left front tire?

I wonder if they kept racing it that way?

  26. They look like they are actually covers for the race tires. They used to do that when they trailered race cars so they didn't damage the race tires.

Look closely and you can see it...
