Technical 51 Mercury chopped rear window options. Show me some pics

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by jamcoupe, Jun 24, 2011.

  1. I've always preferred the 51 mercury back glass. They are available in clear green and grey tints made from laminated glass that allows you to trim as needed
I did one last year where I took 2 inches of the top and changed the radius on the bottom so it could lay down and still use the original Chrome belt line

I believe Paul Bragg did this '49, for Frank Livingston. If I recall, rear window may be a '51 Plymouth (business coupe?).

  4. How about some pics of a 51 window in a 49 or 50.

Heres a pic of my 50. Stock rear window but take notice how it is slid up. Notice the big gap between the window and top of the trunk.

If you don't like the '51 glass laid down (and I'm with you on that one even if a couple of those posted are really nice), the key is to find one that is not too narrow. To my eyes the '41 Chevy and '51 Plymouth rear windows look too small, making the roof look fat. Might I suggest you start looking at photos of 1949-52 cars and when you find a window that looks good to you, do some measuring to see how it looks on the Merc roof and go from there?
I know 1949 or so Packard (the bathtub/elephant model) has a nice back glass, but not sure it's wide enough to look good on a Merc roof.

I have a photo somewhere of a '59 Merc with a '40 Ford split back glass. It looks terrible! Way too small.

The safest bet is the '50 Merc glass, but I for one would love to see you find something unusual that looks "right" on there!

  8. Any old photos from back in the day of 50 Windows in 51 s ?

Somewhere in the Bible I recall reading "The perfect '51 Merc chop includes a '51 rear window"... it's right after the part where they talk about "give a man a chop versus teach a man to chop..."

  11. I think Mercury Charlie's car maybe the best '51 rear window chop:

This thread is over 2 years old.... I have since sold the windowless Mercury. For what its worth if i would have kept it i would found a 51 back glass to put back in it.

That's handy to know! can you cut the original glass? I was thinking of shaving a bit off the corners when I chop it.

  16. There is a glass supply guy on ebay that sells them.

    See here. http://www.ebay.com/usr/classic-auto-glass

The stainless corner has definitely been trimmed.
