History 60's Full Fendered Coupes with Pie Crusts!

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Hackman, Sep 24, 2013.

  1. What size slicks do you guys think would have the correct look in ma coupe? I'm running 750-16's on the rear and kind of want the same appearance. Here is an older pic to see the tuck.

Honestly, it's just an opinion, but to really "rock" pie crust type slick you really should be running 15" wheels. An 8.20X15 on a 7" or 8" wheel looks classically awesome. By the time that the typical pie slick came about in the late fifties, 16" wheels were kinda passe' in the hot rod world. They pair a bit better with the late forties/early fifties dry lakes kinda stuff just prior to drag racing. That is not to say that NOBODY ran 16" wheels, 'cause they were out there. But so far everything that has been shown is 15" in the 8.20 range. I'm trying to dig up a picture that I have seen of Squeeg Jergers '32 from the early sixties.... It's perfect!

    Edit: Found it!

  5. You are totally correct about the 15 inch sizes. I guess the main objective it to actually "tuck" the slick under the fender edges a bit to attain the Doyle Gammel coupe look. I had also wanted to do an OE chrome wheel and they are more readily available in 15 inch. Who makes a 15inch 5 on 5 1/2 OE chrome wheel?

Thanks again for all the advice. Keep those pics coming.
    Thanks

There are a couple sedans and a couple vickys, but I think the style works for all the body styles.

Speedway has a 15X5" in there latest catalog on page 223 in chrome for 149.95. Although truth be told I'd call rallykid from here on the H.A.M.B. and buy through him first.

I had the makings for a full fendered coupe that I had been collecting for years, when someone came along at Christmas time and offered me about twice what I thought it was worth. Dumb... It was to have 15" early Ford wheels all around with Hurst slicks on the back tucked under the fenders. To accomplish this with a '42-'48 rear end I built a special pair of rear wheels with fifties pickup centers. I used 8" outer hoops with a ton of backspace so they looked stock from the outside.

I had a 1956 Ford cheap hardtop with radiused wheel wells, in order to clear the 10" slicks. I love radiused wheel-wells!!

You may need to do a mini-tub job to get them in that far.

    Cool thread by the way.

  21. Titus, I just read the entire thread. Way cool man. Excellent work!

  22. Here is the pic that was trying to upload earlier. Just to demonstrate the tuck in the fender. I think that an 8 inch wide slick should fit snug under the edges.

Anyways have a good week boys.
