Works just like the old format on my desktop, so I'm ok there, but I can't find the "HAMB" on my phone (probably cause I'm dumb). On the phone I only see the new sections, which I don't like at all. I sort of enjoy the off topic discussions, as long as they are generally related to hot rods (no politics).
They have that. It's called anywhere else on the Internet you want to go. Nobody is forced here, and it's still exactly the same as it was.
Shoulda just tightened it up and shut out all the crap, then it wouldn't have had to have been split up into little pigeon holes. I realise that's a lot easier said than done, but I like traditional hot rods AND customs, AND a bit of associated banter, so this "New Way" sucks for me.
Not gettin it is more like it …. like every other has said already nothings changed on the main (HAMB) page. Think of the others as filtered and use your back button
This has been posted here before, but as far as the search function; going to Google.com and typing site:jalopyjournal.com followed by your search words, will get you much better results for most forum searches.
I was grumpy about changes until I realized the same old HAMB was a click away. It got me to thinking about what a whiney little bitch I had become.I am so tied into the computer that I can`t tap to another screen... gave my head a shake and moved on. Talk about first world problems eh?
As we get older we like change even less. 1st this is a free site to read with a lot of info. 2nd you can go to the other site like this one, oh yeah there isn't one. 3rd piss off, if you don't like it make your own website, and see how it goes. 4th this is a free site. I am not a fan of change, but next year at this time we won't even be talking about this. These changes will be old news, and everyone will be happy.
I'm pretty sure there is no "nefarious" intent on Ryan's part to use the "unwitting" for financial gain. The man is a businessman with a passion for Traditional Rods and Customs, and put a lot of time into his craft. Servers aren't free, and neither should his services be.. The bottom line, the Jalopy Journal and his other sites are FREE. If you choose to become an alliance member, it will cost you fifty bucks, and Ryan gets a bump, but it also gives you substantial discounts with alliance vendors that will more than pay for your membership. In my opinion (and yes, I'm entitled to one, just as you are), the Jalopy Journal, and the HAMB in particular has been a catalyst for a resurgence in popularity of the Traditional Rod scene, and has put me in touch with a lot of folks I can genuinely count as friends that I would have never met otherwise. Long Live the H.A.M.B., and Atomic Industry!
It hasn't been split up. As mentioned, just go to the HAMB and ignore the other sub categories and you're essentially seeing the ol school HAMB. "Traditional Hot Rods, "Traditional Customs" are merely 'sub-categories' of the main message board. Those are defined for folks that don't want to read about gas prices, Happy Birthday wishes and other drama. Here's Ryan's sticky on the HAMB for anyone that didn't see/read it. Simple and user friendly for everyones tastes; The General Discussion Forums: An Index & Explanation Of Each <HR style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #e5e5e5; COLOR: #e5e5e5" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->The H.A.M.B. now houses five different forums and while it may seem a bit complicated at first, it's actually quite simple. Here's an index and explanation for each: 1. Traditional Hot Rods - The Traditional Hot Rod forum is reserved for threads and posts pertaining to period correct hot rods only. Please use this forum for technical threads, build threads, historical threads, and feature threads only. 2. Traditional Customs - The Traditional Custom forum is reserved for threads and posts pertaining to period correct customs only. Please use this forum for technical threads, build threads, historical threads, and feature threads only. 3. Traditionally "Styled" Hot Rods, Customs, & Production Vehicles - The Traditionally "Styled" Forum is reserved for threads and posts pertaining to cars that might not be "period perfect," but are traditionally styled. This is not a forum for modern street rods, rat rods, or anything else... Please use this forum for technical threads, build threads, and feature threads only. 4. Traditional Discussions & Happenings - This forum is reserved for threads and posts pertaining to event coverage, art & inspiration, and historical threads. Note: This forum is actually the old "General Discussion" forum from the H.A.M.B. before we split into multiple focused forums. Over time, we will be moving many of the old threads from this forum into the appropriate forum listed above, however, this will take some time and frankly, I don't ever expect to get them all moved. 5. The Hokey Ass Message Board - For almost 20 years, the H.A.M.B. ran with only one general discussion forum. Despite the fact that this created some real problems for those looking for specific information, many grew to love the format as one only had to look in a single forum to see everything happening on the H.A.M.B. from hot rods to customs... We felt the H.A.M.B. needed to be split into the focused forums, but we didn't want to disappoint our users that loved the old singular and simple format. So, to give those folks what they wanted, we created an aggregate forum. In this forum every post from every general discussion forum is listed. In short, it's just like the old H.A.M.B.
Random peoples computer illiteracy isn’t Ryan’s fault … this is exactly what went on when Ryan changed ford barn from carrier pigeon to this style forum ... and they got over it.
I dont understand the confusion, really, pretty easy to hit "new posts" tab and see everything, or simply go section to section if you like the content of the section, but otherwise, "new posts" gets you the whole current enchilada or go to "HAMB" tab and its the same old same old.
What's so difficult here? The aggregate forum is the same as it has been all along. So if you walked into a McDonalds and it had a "milkshake line only" off to the right along with their other lines, would you walk around in circles and not know what to do??? AGAIN, aggregate forum...aggregate forum...this is where you get the whole (happy) meal.
Community? That's not why I signed up...I signed up for traditional hot rods & customs. If they leave because it's now more focused then good for them & good for us.
I have been away from here for quite a while, and come back on to find all this change! It took me approximately 2 min out of my life to figure out that the mainboard Is still the mainboard and that Ryan has added some cool sub forums for those of us with a specialist interest, and I ain't no rocket scientist! Come on now, how hard can it be. Ignore sub forums and stick to the mainboard and nothing has changed. Personally I can't thank Ryan enough for the extras. It must've been 100 times harder to set them up then it is to take a little time out, engage your brain and figure out how to use them. Paul
Use the regular HAMB message board forum and it's still the same. You now have the choice to to look at the more focused sections of the board. The only real difference for me is that I must now choose a heading when starting a new thread. "Freedom of choice is what you've got, freedom from choice is what you want." - DEVO.
ryan told me it's not an us vs. them mentality. the more i see of this, the less i'm likely to believe him
Really? All you've done is bitch about the change since the rumblings first started. It's not about 'us' vs. 'them' because it's not about 'us' and/or 'them'...it's about the cars, man. If folks don't like it, there are other options...this isn't about exclusivity, it's about focus. Refining that focus is a good thing.
Damn I hope McDonald's doesn't change their menu board. I wouldn't know how to navigate and probably fucking starve.
The format is fine for me, but I had a couple of questions about what goes where. Ryan and Kevin Lee suggested to me and others that we re-read the guidlines. So I did...and it helped. It was kinda like this...lol...
