Ahhhh,finally a thread on this cool project...i was seeing a pic in and there somewhere on the Hamb and always intrigued to see more...

Way cool vision and execution...this will be a fantastic taildragger and as usual scandinavians GET IT!!!

Awesome work on a beautiful car. Please, Please keep the stock Zephyr grill, like the 40 Mercurys, its what make the front end so curvy and pleasing to the eye. Changing the perspective from the curvy horizontal grill to a long vertical grill of the Packard will confuse the eye and lose appeal IMHO.

You are a talented builder. Are you planning on extending the rear end as well?

the packard grille looks really nice on your mock up. it's easy to look better than the ugly stock one, but this one looks to be the one... Very Westergard !

living in a country where coupes and convertibles are really uncommon I love these kind of projects.

Out of curiousity did the zephyr coupes and sedans share the same wheel base?

 

Nice I like the way the trunk and rear fender blend with the skirts. Make it shine as an art deco jewel.

Yes, they both have a 125 inch wheelbase.

 

I agree with Zed, that Packard grille makes it a custom !

 

A different grill does not make it a custom - or at least, not a successful one.
One of the most iconic customs of all time retained the stock grill - the Matranga Merc. Nick Matranga's insistence (while at Barris) that his car retain the stock grill was brilliant, in that he understood that the stocker was wonderful and that no other grill could better compliment his car.
A good custom is about cleaning up the flaws of a car's design, to allow the good parts of its design to show more clearly.
The stock grill on this particular car is a masterpiece of great design, and is a crucial element of the whole shape of the front of the car.
Just because so many other truly great customs used Packard grills, doesn't automatically mean it is always the best choice.

 

How I missed this I do not know but very cool build. Keep the updates coming.

Its your car and do what makes you happy. But I have to say the beauty of the original grille is amazing. Dont get me wrong, I like the packard grille as well but I think it would take away from flow of the body you are creating. The body flow you have created on the rear of the car matches the front fenders and stock grille very well. I think the packard grille disrupts that flow. You have an awesome build going and really looking forward to watching this car come together!!

IMO, the Zephyr has the sweetest rear treatment of any. You just can't beat those rear fenders.

Looks really great! You are doing some very nice job on that one! Love that you keep the driveline too!

A small advice about the A-pillar form. An original convertible A-pillar is straight all the way up. It doesn't have a rounded form at the top towards the side window. So, no matter if you will have a vent window or not, it should be straight. Check out pics of an original convertible to see the shape.
