Looking to put dual exhaust on a 49 Tudor Sedan. Flathead V8. Seen speedway has headers says they fit but look real cheap. Found some other options but nothing I got real excited about?
Anyone have anything for sale. Or
Can anyone Guide me to a good Dual exhaust setup for 1949 Ford Custom V8 Flathead?

Yes I also have Red;s work great

  7. I've had Red's in 2 of my cars, I'll be buying them again.

Other options are Fenton or Sanderson, I've heard there are fitment issues with both.

Also remember that your rear crossmember has a hole on the passenger side for the exhaust pipe to go thru, and you will need to make a hole on the other side for duals.

Do duals make much difference on a stocker flathead engine?
    Cooling?
    Performance?

I used Red's ceramic coated for my 8BA. Fit and finish was very nice, did as daddio said and took it to the local muffler shop for a custom install.

It's the sound, you'll never feel the difference in the ol' butt dyno.

Ya get what ya pay for. Some of Speedway's stuff is okay but when it comes to things like headers you want quality stuff. Nothing worse than an exhaust leak inside the engine bay of a shoebox. You just can't get to it to fix it, and just putting exhaust gaskets in is a huge pain in the ass.

I have a set of the "inexpensive" Speedway Headers on my '49 just to be able to drive it around, etc.... You will NOT be able to hook up the exhaust pipe to the Driver's side due too interference with the steering linkage. I am just running the Headers with no exhaust for now (mock up stage, etc...)

I put duals on my 53 Ford convert back in the day - pipe came out of the front of the manifold and turned toward the rear, then went under the X frame crossmember - not a pretty routing. Not something I would do .....:eek:

I am not sure about the shoebox but on my 51 Merc they had cut windows in the X member to run the dual side through the X member. It had headers with the flathead when I bought it in 1963 and we ran the duals through the X member when I put the 350 Olds in it in the late 80's.

I'm looking at Reds Headers for the flathead in my model A as "cheap" headers always seem to give me problems no matter what engine and chassis I run them in.

I have this set up on my 50 merc. Someone burned holes down the passenger side for duals at some point in its past. I used those holes and put together a set of duals from straight tubes and 4 U bends from the stock manifolds back. Won't win any beauty contest but came out nice. I can post pics or a video if you like.

I have a set of original Fenton headers on my '51 Club Coupe. I had to put in a new set of motor mounts and do a little grinding to get them to fit. They are little close to the steering box, but I've not had any problems since I put them in on 1988 (the local Midas shop bent up the rest of the pipes for about $100). Bottom line? I love he sound and everything about them.

Just FYI, I fired my shoebox last night for really the first time. I had fired it up two weeks ago but a bad fuel pump kept it from running for more than just a few seconds at a time. Dialed it in last night and had the wife fire it up while I adjusted the timing. I think she was more excited than I was!

Chrome Red's headers, 1 3/4" exhaust all the way out the back with no mufflers. It's loud, but I think it'll be okay. If it's too much I'll go with some Porter or Brockman 6" steel packs.

My exhaust guy did the whole system from the headers to the bumper for $200. I told him it was going to be LOW so keep it tucked up real high. He did a great job and worked the driver's side around the clutch linkage toward the trans so that I can still get to my master cylinder. I have an ECI unit sitting in the trunk that will be installed soon.

Here's a few pics of the exhaust install...

Years ago I bought some of those $100 flathead headers from a swap meet. They didn't work at all. No clearance on drivers side. Bought Reds headers. Called them they wanted the body style and guaranteed to fit. Its a tight fit around the steering box. Take it from people that have done it don't buy two sets. I heated and cut on the cheap set and threw them in the scrap.
