Why do some of you own multiples of the same car?

I knew a guy that had over 30 1967 Chevelles. Most were parts cars; but he always seemed to have several running too. I like a variety of cars, but I see guys with 2, 3, or more cars of the same year make and model, to the exclusion of other old cars. Dontcha get bored?

I had several of the same year and model , but different options and motors , I had a cruiser , and a racer that had the same interior and paint , only the engines sound let you know what was what . and the 3rd car was used a good weather daily . as it was a non collector car .

I would love to have another car like I have now, but without the modifications . one for play and one for cruising and showing .

  3. I've own all kinds of cars and I find over the years that in the earlier cars the are multiple body style available.

I am a Deuce guy and presently have only two 1932 Fords,a pickup & a sedan but have owned as many a 4 running & driving Deuces at on time.

If money was no object I would have one of every body style made in 1932. HRP

  4. Chances are they have variations- different engine packages, auto trans or manual, trim package, etc.

My dad used to collect toy trains, and had a large collection of 248's (little box cab electric that Lionel made in the 30's). His goal was to have 48 of them, and knew of that many variations, including the types of screws used to hold the motor in :D

Some guys like blondes, some like redheads.

  6. Quite often when you buy these cars, they come with extra parts.
You gain a certain amount of knowledge/idiosyncrasies about the cars.
After a while with this assortment of extra parts and knowlege, it makes sense financially/skill wise to continue buying that type/style of car.

My buddy and I refer to that as the "fleet factor".

Also, don't discount that once you start moving in certain circles projects tend to find you. I couldn't for the life of me find the exact car I wanted when I started out, but now that I have a couple that are similar, I could have purchased what I wanted a number of times. People see you driving one and they say "Hey, my buddy has one of those that he'd like to sell" or other owners who already know you let you know when they're looking to turn stuff loose.

My wife thinks they show up at my house in the middle of the night.
I have 6 for unibody trucks. 3 opel gts, 2 mavericks and 2 57 fords 2 falcons and 1 mustang fastback.
I actually drove two of the trucks and the rest were so cheap I had to buy them.
Others I have always wanted and have just kinda purchased as I had the money and space to keep them.

When I asked my father why he had 3 Crosley's he said he needed 3 to keep 1 running. I was very young at the time and understood exactly what he meant.

There's an elderly lady around here that has 16 '61 Chevys. She has each model, most with 409's. She even has a '61 Chevy race car. The exception? She has a '57 Chevy convertible, black with a red interior and a fuel injected engine. She bought it on her wedding day, drove it home and parked it. It has 16 miles on it. Guess what? She has no children, so there's no one to leave the collection to.

I like blondes, brunettes and raven haired beauties. I also like pink or streaked purple, but I must say, I love redheads the best!

And I would love to own a 34 Plymouth coupe too... I couldn't see owning the same exact car with different options, but the same exact year with different body styles... yep

  20. Where I grew up I knew of an old man who had at least one of every 32 Ford made. He loved them. A buddy of mine only fools with 32 Fords. He told me 40 years ago that he thinks if you are going to build old cars then stick with just the one you like the most. Now I consider him an expert on them because he has had so many over the years. He has forgotten more than I know about them.Hey, he still has the same wife also...but only one. I used to have 7 Fairlanes of the same year because I thought they were the best looking car ever at the time. Sometimes you just find something that is just right for you and you will love it all your life.

Id like 2 get a second 54 Chevy. Possibly a no post car. One for restoring and customizing. The other for a daily driver.

  23. Once we started looking for tri fives, in the 80's, and parts to go with them, it all just started happening. People would stop by an ask if we wanted to buy their cars/parts. Or give us leads. One guy called to buy a fiberglass frt end we had, by the end of the conversation.. He was selling us the the car. A good friend of my dads, had a wrecking yard. So anything that came through there, dad had first pick. My dad would upholster and paint the tow trks and the occasional ot turds, the yard owner wud be trying to flip for a profit. So the barter was nice, when that yard and dad was still around. Now things have changed, but I still have a bunch of 55-59 Chevies. That's what dad really liked. But he never wanted wanted any Nomads or convertibles. Never understood that

Every car I've owned found me, I've never looked for a specific car. Model T & A Fords were the most common. Having the same type cars helps when you need a part doner. Bob

Exactly. He gets REAL good at it...an expert...a specialist. Not just working on them, but also knowing the going rate for the cars and related parts. He knows a good deal when he sees it and buys because he knows he'll need it sooner or later...or sell and make a profit here and there.

  27. Yeah, but it gets real ugly when you have a collection of them out in the field. Cadaver dogs, lawyers, DAs, prison buddies. that funny chair they plug into the wall socket...

I own 2 1966 Dodge Coronet 440's, one hardtop, one convertible. My Dad bought the convertible in 1976 - I always loved the car, in '89 I bought my hardtop, it was fun to cruise together. Pinky died in '09, now I have 2

My stuff is rare - not 'Ford rare' as in 'they only built 3000 of them' - sorry that's not rare in my book. Imagine three thousand of one model all lined up in a row! I am talking double or even single digit original production and this is where the theory of synchronicity comes into play. Find one of something and it will attract more of it's own kind. When you focus on something, things happen and others pop out of the woodwork. In two instances I have acquired a super rare car only to find more and have acquired a second of the same exact model within a year. It's like an electromagnetic attraction of others to their own kind. So I have two of each and in many instances could have had a third. And when I look at the rarity I get nervous about the sheet metal - how do you replace it if some cellphone yakking, texting while driving, generally distracted idiot runs into you? Let the hoarding begin;). But the simple answer to the question of why I have two of the same model is - backup....
