2.02 valves wont work with stock bore, but he's going .060" over, so no problem with clearances.

  2. I have a 283 with a set of power pack heads, how can you tell if the seats have been replaced with hardened ones? Also if they in fact do have hardened seats I had thought of replacing the 1.70 intake valves with the 305 1.84, would i need to replace the exhaust valve with the 305 1.60, i believe, also? Would this be an adviseable move or not? Going to run Offenhauser 3x2 intake with 3 holley 94's, 700R4 trans and a 3.73 gear in a nine inch rear. Any cam recommendations?

    Thanks in advance

Anyone have advice on an intake/carb combo that would compliment the comp 268 cam and power packs???

305 Heads would be close, a little more potential than the 520's. Single 4 would be a lot easier to tune. I was figuring 2 390's or similar for your dual, a 650 - 700 single 4 would make about the same.

  7. Not familiar with WI but I hit CL with 416 heads in a few different cities.
Entire 305 HO engine + 416 heads for 150 needs rebuilt.
Another 305 ho with trans runs
Another set fresh and ready to go make offer.

    They are out there

Some 601 heads will yield more compression.

Also found a set of 601's for $50

    Decisions decisions.....

  13. Sounds good !

You'll need to figure your compression ratio with either.

Detonation prevention or reduction can be done by removing potential hot spots, and keeping your quench distance tight.
Busting off the hard edges will decrease hot spots and will increase the CCs of the combustion chambers, the 601s will let you do more of that before you loose compression.

You can also go lumpier on your cam choice, raise Rpms move power band up and bleed of some cylinder pressure.

If you're replacing the valves, you should skip the 1.84's and go to 1.94's. Same price, and better breathing. I'd go to 1.60 on the exhaust too.

So long as they're not cracked....305 heads were big on that.

So, what am I actually gaining from the 601's or 416's compared to the power packs? Is it worth buying them and still having to do the valve job and spring upgrades?

So I ran across a qaudrajet carb and intake for $70, they any good after a rebuild? I've read both negative and positive...

  20. Well you'll have to do springs anyway.
But you'll get hard exhaust valve seats.
    Bigger valves,
    Bigger runners,
    Better flow,
    Near perfect velocity
    More compression
    More power.
Also some accessory holes you might not want.
They learned a lot in those 20 years between manufacturing dates.

Then secondary you can utilize- if you wish
A bigger cam, higer revving, higher power band, looser converter, numberically higher gears.

They are great heads for the smaller bore engines, and cheap too. the 4"+bore engines guys will fall on their face on the top end with them. It's all about flow and velocity. No flow and its out of breath- no velocity and there's no power.

Nothing wrong with Quadrajets; a very versatile carburetor. However, they made them for over 30 years and some of them won't do you any good. There should be an I.D. number stamped on the driver side about 2/3 of the way back, vertically, unless it's very early ('65-'67), in which case it will have a round dime sized tag pressed into the driver side of the main body.

Look for late 70s - 1980, after 80 most will be electronic.

Here you go, as ground ICL 99 LSA 105, with 305 heads

Would it change head and cam choice if I bore to 4"? That's only if the machinest says I have enough wall....

  29. Yea, quite a bit.
You'll have a 301 and should follow proven 301 recipes.

You could go with Patriot 2168 -about 800 assembled ready to run or the ever popular Vortecs. You will need to figure pistons to get the right compression. here is the XE274 with stock vortecs

Maybe up one notch on cam, starting to get pretty far from the original idea.
