Projects Tucks AV8 Pickup build thread-----> BABE THE BLUE OX

I started collecting parts last summer-

It started with a 40 rear and top shift trans-
then a frame I scored for 50 bucks
then fenders...
and kinda snow balled-

Now its getting to the point of Awesome.

I hauled this cab home that a friend of mine bought because he was inspired by Titus's place and hung it up in his rafters of his shop-

well he was going to use the old box from my truck that was sitting outside during the fire- and when I called and asked him to pick it up he thought I should take the cab instead... so we struck a deal.

Our chickens loved it-

Tokyo and I hit up Iola... scored the hood, grill etc cheap-
Bird at work sold me the fenders... and gave me 3 '40 wheels!

Things started to come together...

My old shop teacher had an extra drop axle he sold me..

I wanted 30 31 fenders but after mocking it up I was like no way... these look good-

I was searching 29 fenders with 30 cab and found the Alexander Brothers built the grasshopper like that... so I knew I was on the right track.

 

I had bought this Y block from Baggs here on the hamb. It was his grampas and he decided to go with a higher horsepower engine trans combo and sold me the y-block. Its never been fired... still has assembly lube on the inside with a nos 94, nos fuel pump... just like it was pulled out of a brand new car.

I scored a speed gems adapter here on the hamb and bolted it up to the top shift I scored last summer-

Bingo... there it is.

 

I wanted to keep this build as simple as possible-

Idea being you change one thing you end up changing two others... so I was trying to keep this A frame basic- like how tardel would build an AV8 in that traditional hot rod book-

I had to come up with some sort of cross member but didnt know what-

I ended up buying an extra x member at a swap early on in the summer for my roadster... and was thinking... if I cut it in half I could make two K members out of it...

So thats what I did...

 

The X member is much wider then the A frame so I made some boxing plates that dropped down for the split A bones-

 

Back outside to do a mockup... made a front motor mount and bolted the engine in-

Its in the perfect spot- need to alter the firewall to a flat one.. but other than that... fit like a glove.

front motor mount attaches to the crossmember in the center- im almost finished ill post pics when its completed.

 

I needed tires in a bad way-
7.50's out back
600's up front-

scored some at the st. cloud swap- for $60... yeah for front and rears... and they're not JUNK- I stayed up late and got them mounted and on the truck~ heres a late night shot---->

 

I ended up scoring a 32 ford model B radiator while looking for a model a rad... one inlet.. one outlet! Perfect... so im on the hunt for a deuce grill shell----> Heres an updated pic with one I borrowed...

 

This thing is gonna look way cool - watching.....

So out back I'm using the spring perches from a model a rear- cut them off some junk housings I got from a model a guy- I'll weld them on the 40 ford axle and mount a model T spring instead of the A- It drops it like 4" and is supposed to ride a lot nicer- and I don't have to Z the rear frame- everything stays in the stock location-

I have the pieces cut off the axle and fit- will upload the pics later- heres what I'm talking about----->

your build is nice and simple tuck
y blocks are sex with bearings and are a big part of aussie rodding history
and man the k member is very cool

 

So you got about $500 in it? Haha... Good scores!

 

I prob have about 3 grand in it so far-

Nice idea with the crossmember! Glad to see it put to good use too!!

 

Nice. I like the X member. Used an F1 in mine. Works good but the additional bracing with that X would have been good.

Right now that is looking to be one of if not my favorite model A pickups ever and its not even done yet, inspiring me to get more work done on mine

 

Agreed! I've missed this one up till now, but I'm paying attention from here on out.

 

I like this whole build, is that speed gems adapter somthing currently produced? how is it?
