We took a 1959 chevy truck axle shorten it by 7 inches and tigged it back together and then a little machine work on it. Milled a little off it and drilled some holes in it to save some weigh...

This might also answer the question. 1968 saw some changes as follows. The biggest was probably in the frame section of the rules. AA/GS through B/G and all cars with unibody construction would now be allowed to use rectangular or square steel tubing in frame construction. The minimum was .120 wall thickness and 2×3 inch rectangular or the equivalent square tubing. Prior to this, the rules called for a “stock automobile type frame”.

What was the rule if a car of the era had no frame? Did Chevy IIs have a frame?

This car could have been a
"MATCH -BASH" car running against some of the altered wheelbase cars. There were a few Chevy II's that ran with straight axles and stock wheelbases and lots of setback to be competitive. It could have been one of them before being campaigned as a gasser.
Here's a couple that look to have stock wheelbases.

I also forgot to mention that the Glendale Speed Center Chevy II supposedly ran on a rectangle tube chassis that used to be a "T" altered chassis to begin with, I have no proof of this it's just what I read somewhere. So there is no telling what the car started life as.

all cars with unibody construction would now be allowed to use rectangular or square steel tubing in frame construction. This was in my post above. All of this is from NHRA, IHRA and other sanctioning bodies may have been different.

We did our home work before making the rules it's era correct like Frank said the rule was changed I thought it was in 1967 but it could have been 68. Cromer changed the rear of his in 67 when the stock frame broke at Indy. Fiberglass body's were also legal in 67.

I knew they changed the rules, but I didn't know when. I looked it up and it said 68, the year I graduated high school.
