Burning up coils ????

Need help guys !!!
I keep burning up coils 351w with axcel elct. distributor just replaced my 4th' coil inabout 5 years what could be causing it

Any HELP PLEAS

post pics of engine. has been threads on here about the importance of how to position one.

 

Its mounted on the inner fender well passenger side ????

 

Ever check the voltage at the + connection on your coil when your engine is running? Might be a good starting point.

If its too high - that could be your problem.

 

You prolly need a resistor before the coil

What coil are you running?

 

If it's upside down the electrons fall out

Though I guess there are SOME coils that are a bit picky about positioning.

 

I know the old Accel Super Coil required a ballast resistor before the coil. It's been decades since I've used one.

 

No resistor or resistance in the power feed to the coil to cut the voltage when operating sure sounds like it may be the cause.

If it is a Super Coil the Jegs Add http://www.jegs.com/p/Accel/Accel-Super-Coil-Ignition-Coil/1732359/10002/-1 Says that it should come with a .85 ohm ballast resistor in the box meaning that they expect you to use the ballast resistor in the power feed to the coil.

 

But the earth is positive so it should repel them (the electrons).

Back to reality, oil filled coils need to be mounted vertically, TU (Terminals Up).

Premature coil failure is related to heat. Excessive primary current can be reduced by ballast resistance. Since the coil is making it a year or so a small ballast resistor like the .85 should make it live a long time.

High load due to secondary resistance or plug gap will stress the coil also.

What the others said. Mount upright, use a ballast resistor when running.

Hint - Install a switch to bypass the ballast resistor while starting. Puts full battery voltage to the coil while cranking, which can fall off quite a bit due to the starter draw.

You can install a relay to handle this automatically, or be cheap like me and install a three-position (SPDT) maintained switch under the dash. Run-Forward, Start-Back, Off-Middle. Doubles as a kill switch, too. About $4 plus wire.
