History Saw a Futurliner that was a flatbed tow today

Haven't found any info. I saw a Futurliner going the other way on the 118 today. It was basically a flat bed after where the traditional side doors would have been with the flatbed just above the stainless side trim. Trippy to see. It had a 40's ford on the flatbed part. Anyone know what about it?

 

Sure that it was a Futureliner? There were only 12 made. One is in Europe. One was destroyed. Two are known beyond repair, and two are unaccounted for.

 

Positive. There was one floating around the valley for years. 9 are accounted for. Definitely an odd site too bad it was going the other way for a pic.

Basically from the door seam back gone. Flat bed level with the stainless.

 

I know of two, in Southern California. On was cut off like that, but last time I saw it, it seemed like it was too far gone to do anything with. Maybe somebody got ambitious.

 

Yes there is one around here. It was for sale on Craigslist for a while. But yeah, it was one of the 1/12

 

Probably this one. Since this was in socal in the pics from a few years ago.

Oh for a dollar and the right six numbers! That thing would be the most bitchin' motor home at Bonneville! Hacked to bits for a flat bed isn't so bad. Crying shame it was done so poorly.

Can we see that with a three foot section job and a Bonneville LSR car on the back with clear plastic body panels? Bob

 

I have been on board one of these - at the Charlotte Auto Fair in the Charlotte, NC. Sure is a big vehicle when you consider the powerplant they had. I bet they were awful to drive.

 

Jim, that was me you saw on the 188 yesterday I was running it back to Chatsworth from my shop here in San Luis, the picture you posted above is this one while it was still in the design stages, on the back was a prototype electric vehicle made by Otis Elevater for the Postal service back in the early 70's.
The NATMUS Museum in Aurburn Ind owned this one and wanted parts off of it to restore theirs this one was in real sorry shape so the cab was put on a garbage truck frame and built as a car hauler.

A welding shop in Lake Elinsore put it together I don't think they have anything on it, its been a piece of work for the last 12 years, they did bacisily the hard part and I then get all the detail work to finish out, it shows well but needs a lot of attention in many areas,there is an onboard generator for the tower lites and the inside of th estainless railing is loaded with lites for stage settings, the owner hopes to rent it out for a portable stage at times, it'll be at the SEMA show this year used as a stage for a fuel company.

 

That one went into my favs!!!....

I'd have to call that "Parts truck got saved". Along with being saved it turned into a nifty rig with a whole new lease on life.

The doner truck chassis was a CCC, Crane Carrier Corp, equipped with a NTC 230 Cummins and an Allison 645 slush box and somehow Peterbilt air ride on a 390 ratio rear axle, its also equiped with an Extreme flip tail EZ loader in the rear, the back end opens like a clam shell to flip the ramp out to load.

 

Just epic to see. Nice car on the back. Nice job to save one.

 

Thankyou, you should see more of it off and on, the owner will get down to the Topanga mall get together on some Sunday, today he had it out to some museum with the 47 Caddy I put on in place of the Otis yesterday.

Very cool, I got to sit in one at Pebble Beach a few years back, crazy seating position.

 

There was one converted to a motorhome. I saw it on HGTV a few (?) years back. Guy did a real nice job on it.

You're right,that car hauler is way bitchin'
