I was wondering how does one come up with a title? The builder of our car had originally offered one but recently decided to increase the price of it. I have been looking for one and found one that does not specify the windows in the vehicle. Does anyone know what this means? How should I go about finding a title? Thanks for your help. Titles can be a nightmare,at least where I live. You can go to the DMV with all your receipts and apply for a title, usually the problem with that is they will issue it as a 2013,that equals higher taxes and your 1932 Ford is titled as a 2013 which will create a problem when and if you decide to sell later on down the road. If the car has a original frame you can apply for a lost title but the number may be used on another car that is registered and titled. HRP
I've never seen windows listed on a title. All of mine say cp-coupe p-pickup or sd-sedan. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I'm not an expert on Cal & different offices might treat it differently, but we need to know more about the car. I hear Cal is getting tough on registering after market bodies and frames with org titles. They offer 500 smog exemptions every year, if they are taken you have to comply with the regs that applied to the year of the engine. I really don't know about the tax and value problems. That's where Boyd got in trouble, under valuing cars he built.
Awesome Stuff, that was my question if they would specify number of windows or something. So anything as long as it says coupe should work?
sue the builder - he can't offer a title, you buy the car in good faith, then increase the price of the title. I'm sure the DMV would be very interested in his motivation and source of that paperwork.
If I had a steel body 32 5 window with a factory 32 Ford frame under it I'd do the run the car past the inspectors using the vin on the frame. You may be able to get that vin run to see if it's in use but then the person using it would have the fake vin wouldn't they? If it's an aftermarket custom frame all bets are off though as then it becomes a different can of worms. Propwash has a good point there especially if the title actually matches the frame or other numbers on the car.
In California for roadster it says RD in the body type not to be confused with convertible which has CV. Thanks to what Boyd did California now looks at every '32 that comes through with a magnifying glass. You will also need a CHP officer to verify the car and will need this form http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg31.pdf the second page has the designations for the body types.
I don't understand how good faith gets thrown out the window. I guess you can expect anything with sales and the problem is if things are not delivered as they were supposed to be or items are missing. Its a huge mess. That's what I get for inspiring others to make their dream car Thank you, T
Who else just felt a little older? A while back, my 21 year old grand daughter asked me who Clint Eastwood is. Sigh
Search here on the HAMB and on the internet for CA Titles and Boyd. Both have been covered heavily. Boyd was building full aftermarket cars (no original 1932 parts) and getting titles that stated they were 1932 cars. This avoided a lot of regulations and revenue for the state. The state caught on and as a result he had various legal issues and all 1923 (Tbucket), 1932 (duece) Fords and Cobras along with other popular kit styles are carefully scrutinized now during the title process, as $umFun said.... CA has programs in place for aftermarket cars, but it is not easy and they fill up very fast. Do your research.
It had nothing to do with age, just my general knowledge in cars and the industry. I'm an outdoors chick, rarely spend time watching TV. I didn't start learning about this kind of thing until recently. I'm sure if I would have watched a little more TLC I would know Thank you so much roughneck424, that is some scary stuff...
You probably know that California is the toughest state in the nation to title a hot rod in. If the title you found will work, great! If not, here's my thread on obtaining one of the 500 numbers for smog exemption as well as a new title. I walked into DMV with a bill of sale and a photograph. Normally, I would have been laughed at and escorted to the door! However, I informed them I wanted one of the SB100 numbers. There was only one clerk on duty who knew what to do! The rest is history! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=433178
Thank you. How does one go about finding one of those companies? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
what are inferring is that you are intending to break the law and you are asking for members advice on how to get away with it. there is no way this board will condone, encourage or allow that to happen here. if you are asking for advice on how to title your vehicle through legal means that on the other hand is perfectly acceptable.
Yep. It could be translated to "how do I title a stolen car?" Good luck with the car (and title) Almost choked when I read "who's Boyd?" I hadn't considered the possibility of a forum member that didn't know Boyd. Not to disparage, just that I hadn't thought of it. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
It sounds like you purchased a vehicle and did not receive a title. In every state this is illegal. It is also illegal in most states to possess a vehicle without a title. It is also illegal to: attempt to title a vehicle with a title from another vehicle. stamp numbers onto a vehicle, if those numbers are to constitute a VIN. Most of these are only felonies, so only 10-15 years in a federal prison. How to avoid: Never, ever purchase a vehicle without a title. Cosmo
That is the case here in California. Don't even try it. You might not get caught, but if you do, it is indeed a felony. Even if you did not get jail time, try getting a good job as a convicted felon. Possible, yes, but difficult.
I defy anyone to show me one instance of anyone doing 10-15 years, hard time, in a federal pen, for stamping numbers in a frame. I fully agree that these shenanigans are illegal and ethically and morally wrong and can result in big problems, but the whole scenario of being cornholed by Bubba at Pelican Bay is nonsense. More like 6 months, suspended and a big ol' fine. Now, if the frame is an original 32 and has numbers, and they are clear, getting a title in CA is a simple process.
