I work at a hot rod shop. It was my first job. I left a couple years ago and went to work for the studios. That lasted 8 months and I went right back to my old job. It felt good to be home, when i went back

I think that you're right to think about it this way.

The BEST career advice I've ever gotten came from a tough, miserable, grouchy old executive-lifer @ GM.

He said to consider where you will be in 5yrs at your current job. Think in terms of salary, raises, benefits, promotions, etc.

If somebody offers that to you, tomorrow, then start the negotiations!

If I were in your boat I would take the job as you know your job is on shaky ground because of your employers health. If something were to happen to him and your shop did close you would be kicking yourself for not taking the job.

Comparing your salary with another's and bitching about it is grounds for being fired here. Dont worry what others make, you cant spend it. Worry about how to make yourself more valuable.

Ask the machine shop owner if he would entertain the idea of you buying him out, unless he has sons or family that will take it over after he passes.

Hilarious how the opinions keep flowing when what is really needed is an update from the OP.

    It has all been said....

    Hi Hack

I wen't to work at a big time car restoration shop owned by a rich man and it was a zoo, no place to improve my job

Was doing the final put together and had to fix all the other guys mess ups, did not do my homework first about the shop just took my friends word that got me the job

All politics and brown nose stuff and the main boss did not care about me one hoot, so after cutting it for a year I split

See if you can stay at the machine shop and try to make a deal where the owner stays in the loop so he feels like he still has a little say so in his shop that he started

If you buy into that shop can you do the bidding for new work and know where to get new clients as the list always changes over the years

I was all glassy eyed over working at the resto shop but those hi buck places are gathering places for flakes etc and they seem to always keep their job

Good luck with your job stuff

    G Don

Hackman got his answer two weeks ago in post 90.
If he has made no decision, I understand why his fellow employee is getting $5 more an hour....

  18. Nature of the beast though, isn't it? Read the original post, comment, then (maybe) bother to read everyone else's comments that say the same thing. :)

I too, want to hear if Hack made a decision and which way he went.

I'm not sure why, but he isn't talking. I sent him a PM asking for an update and he has been online.

    Guess it's a big secret. :)

  21. Maybe he took the job, hated it or they hated him so he left or got run off and tried to go back to the old job and they said fuck off. He is too embarrased to step up and say so????????? Just sayin..............

A lot of shops are always looking for a better man to do the job. When they find you, they keep looking for a better man to do the job.

    Nuff said.
