most early cars were cross spring front, solid rearend mount. look up the thread on the buntline special.

  4. All fuel altereds I ever saw, and I raced a few of them, had solid rear axles and sprung - tortion bar front ends

  5. If your planning on building real fuel altered and don't know anything about them,,,be very very careful. They are the baddest of the bad to drive and would like nothing better than to hurt you if given a chance. These things are not called AWFUL ALTEREDS for no reason.

Buy a good set of asbestos underwearm sit real low and duck...... :)

  6. Look at pictures of the Winged Express there a plenty of them .They didn't call Willie Borsh " Wild Willie" for nothing those things are animals with a wid heart .

Most were sprung on the front, either with VW torsion bar, or springs. In that era they were all direct drive, no reverse and solid mount rear end.

Mine was built in the style (1965) but was only injected BBC. Solid rear and home hatched VW torsion front.

P&B yes that is a weight bar. Weight up front makes the rear plant harder.

I guess I'm weird too. I always thought it was a shame to cover up the good stuff. Norm

Original Panic, direct drive, aluminum can, cross-spring front end, pretty basic stuff...Les Hawkins built the original chassis, ...learned from Willie, when it got crooked, stay with it, easier to drive out of trouble than to back off, because the short wheelbase and high c/g made it easy to come around quickly if you lifted...however if you got too crooked, the track (Irwindale, in this case), suspended your license, hitting the guardrails was ok, crossing the centerline wasn't

The smart guys (not us) figured out that if you build an AA/FA with a cross spring front end, the spring mount at the center of the front cross-member acts as a pivot, so when the torque twists the rear end, the car pivots on that fulcrum, unloading the right wheel as the engine torques left...and in a short wheelbase car, you quickly get sideways. So the smart guys either used a torsion bar or mounted coil springs at the ends of the cross member (see above) to take away the center pivot point. As for us dumb guys, we just ran out of money before we crashed the altered (that's when Gary Hazen bought Panic, build a new chassis, and became a hero)

    296A,
If you ran a front end set of say, Ex: 90/10 shocks, wouldn't the torque twist either type of springing and induce the veer? If the shocks are positioned correctly, they seem to be a first line, of 'damping' against the twist. And I'd guess would plant one tire, while unloading the other.
