The famous "kitchen debate" beteen then VP Nixon and Soviet Premier Khruschev in a display of a "typical" American house set up in Moscow to show the merits of the American system, July 1959. The Soviets had a similiar display in New York, part of an exchange to compare systems. The debate was filmed and later played on US TV. Note future Soviet PM Leonid Brezhnev to the right of Nixon.

The first one isn't Ernie's (wrong color and license number, engine didn't fall out) but the second one is.
A lot of little things added up that night: downhill grade to a right turn (southbound Beverly Glen just before Santa Monica Blvd.), wet pavement, blood alcohol level right at the limit, tail-happy Corvair wagon, and supposedly he was trying to light a cigar...

  16. I wonder if the photographer took the windshield out just to make this photo?

Here's a video I just saw on YT (from a link on FB Lost Melbourne page) - it's a government produced film that shows Melbourne, Australia in 1966. I turned 9 late in that year, but I remember much of what is shown as I grew up there.

There is a small part of the movie in what I believe is the GM-H plant in Dandenong with the main character's job being starting new red 6 engines for the first time. The young guy drives an EK Holden (like a shrunken 57 Chev)

A couple of US designed cars are evident - a couple of 'Tank Fairlanes' (59 Ford) and a Studebaker in another shot. Most of the cars though are locally produced Holdens with a few Aussie-fied Falcons (XP's) and a couple of Beetles.

Simple times with people just getting on with life. I enjoyed it, I hope you do too. It runs for 18mins.

    Cheers.
