    Close Lil32 - but no cigar !

    From "oldholden.com"

"This model was where it all began, often referred to as the FX Holden, it's real name is the 48/215, 48 being the year it started production and 215 being Standard Sedan (the numbering system remained with Holdens for many years to come with 215 always signifying the Standard type of each model)"

"The FX was given a 2.17 Litre 6 cylinder motor which was later referred to as a "Grey Motor" due to its colour."

    All the story here:

    And !
Before I get jumped on by other board users, there are a couple of "on topic" old shots in that link !

Last time I was at Catalina ( maybe 4 years ago ) the basic circuit was still there and you could drive a lap, awesome circuit in the day, very sad to see it now.
There was a group formed in the early 90's called Friends of Catalina and the idea was to preserve and even restore it but I think the indigenous claim put the ky bosh on that.

If I'm not mistaken, the Corvair wagon smashed into the pole was the accident that took the life of Ernie Kovacs.

In the mid-70s my brother and I were going to the University of KY and would cut tobacco on Lexington area farms to get money to go home on. They paid 5 cents a stick with 5-6 stalks on each. We could make pretty good money as long as the stalks weren't blown down and there weren't a lot of big weeds. Back-breaking work for sure. I haven't been in a tobacco patch in 30 years and don't miss it.

  14. YES it was how Ernie's life ended. He was way ahead of his time.

Was it called Catalina Park after an RAAF Catalina had been displayed at Katoomba?
A24-202 had been purchased by the late H.C. Gates in 1948.
The first race on the circuit was in 1951 if I'm not mistaken.
