I picked up a pair of 17" x 5 1/2" early ford steel wheels and just curious what they might have been on originally? I've never seen these before. They take the early ford hubcaps and are 5 on 5 1/2" bolt pattern.
Dont quote me but I believe that they came on the 42-48 f2 trucks. I believe swensons early ford parts or someone in washington has a truck with them on it. I saw it on instagram. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I honestly can say I have never heard of them. If you want to donate those to my '33 since I already have 17" tires I would kiss you on the lips.
I would guess around 57 to 60 Ford pickup.Ford seem to always have an option on pickups for a size or two larger diameter wheels. with the shape of the wheel center around the hub cap and the long slots they are probably not 40`s. very cool wheels i have not seen those exact ones before.

My dad had some 16.5 x 8" pickup wheels that had the exact same centers...sold them to Wheelkid at Turlock last year. Would be interesting to find out the origin of these. Neal
sure someone has a book somewhere....those wheels center section does look a little different... like the Mopars - I'm sure there were optional Ford wheels up to 17"
Those are 17.5", Normal 17" tires won't fit. I believe they came on some trucks in the late sixties-early 70s. These are the kind I can convert to 18" Jimmy

my BIG Ford truck book didn't list any 5x5 1/2 in a 17".....and my Hollander pre-1950 goes back to 1928 - it lists a 18" 5x5 1/2 on staff cars 1941-44 and Buick -1933 and Stude 1934 had steel disk wheels in a 17" 5x5 1/2.... had some of my Stude trucks with 17.5....kinda hard tire to find....
Sorry Sledge for highjacking your thread. Igot some 17.5 ford steelies that are 8 lug. They take the mid50s ford center caps... Ate these the split widowmaker kind? How easy is to convert to 18"? Heres a few pics. Thanks
defiantly agree on measuring again, reason being my grandfather owned afew f100's and one came as a "heavy duty" set up with 17 and a half in wheels. even when we took the wheels to shops they measured them as a 17 inch wheel until we fiinally found a shop that told us about the very not sought after 17.5 wheel that some of these trucks came with, and how hard it is to replace a tire. but just my 2 cents
They are listed in the Green Bible (Chassis Parts and Accessories 1928-1948 passenger car and 28-47 pickups/trucks) and other later Fomoco parts listings. Those are usually called rough usage or high clearance wheels and were available as accessories for both cars and pickups from about 1940 through the 48 cars and pickups up into the early 60s.
Jimmy, I have a set of 4 of these and they are truly 17" - they appear to be exactly like a 16" center but with longer "spokes" - extremely cool wheels. Mine are for sale...update, they are now sold. Steve
