You are correct Floorboardinit. You have a good memory. The caption in Dain Gingerelli's book reads...... Scott xxxxxx started with a fully restored 1932 Ford roadster to build this replica of a car his father and grandfather raced in the 1934 Gilmore Cup. All the parts, including the magnesium wheels, hood straps, and cut windshield are original old parts that Scott located at automotive swap meets.
Too bad my good memory only applies to hot rod related matter and not math and science...probably woulda done better in high school. JohnnyA
Thanks for all the info on the Scott XXXXXX car... and thanks for sharing the pics, bonesy. So one could call it a "tribute" car. Wonder who XXXXXX's father and grandfather are? Most of the drivers in the race were regular racers.
gilmore.......I first started the "MINES FIELD 1934 ROAD RACE = L.A. AIRPORT" on 05-09-12......you posted your 1st of 5 posts on there 03-25-12......look again, it's in my albums....... thanks, cw.
I too was not able to find an Album with that title. However, you did start a thread titled 'Mines Field 1934 Road Race = L.A. Airport' on 03-23-12. That is the one Gilmore mentioned above. Could you perhaps provide a link to the album you are referring to? It does not show up, even when clicking 'Show all albums' on your profile...
Sweet lil B roadster! I don't see why a well-equipped banger like this one (dual Winfield SR carbs & 7:1 "Red Head") wouldn't be able to hang with the V8s. If memory serves, bangers were still competitive on the lakes until the late 40's - but then again, that's a whole different sort of racing.
That #46 roadster is a great example of a pre-war lakes roadster that sounds as good as it looks. Nothing cooler sounding than a straight piped hopped up banger! The owner is a really nice guy, I met him at the LARS while looking at the roadster and his vast amount of RARE early Ford and speed parts. I bought a couple early SW gauges from him that are now in my coupe, and after showing him a picture of my lakes '34 roadster he cut me a killer deal for being a young guy interested in the same time period of style. This is by far one of the best threads going on here!!
I think that my roadster could be counted as a 40's period hot rod. (Sorry about the person blocking the car)
I'm with you! My old roadster now owned by Bonsey in the above posts was a hot iron. That lil banger beat everybody at the beach at the 1st Race Of Gentlemen. When that car was finally road worthy after the build, I had only newly had my license back after a 10 year absence. I had that needle so buried on the street I couldn't believe it. Speedo went nuts! I had to back off as at the time I had a funny wheel and was on probation. I love a hot banger! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I think the reason the banger couldn't hang with the V8s at Mines Field, Elgin, etcetera was that those were Stock Car races and the engines were supposed to be stock.
That's only because you were the only person to get plenty of practice in running on that sand. Everyone else dug ruts and or got buried in waves.
Wonder if anyone will show up at this year's Race of Gentlemen with their banger equipped with them newfangled "balloon" tires? That would be downright ungentlemanly.
OOOOOPS.......SORRY "gilmore" & everyone else, I screwed up!!! It's NOT in my "albums", I was referring my thread: "MINES FIELD 1934 ROAD RACE" CW.
