Hey Nash , glad to see your making headway on the body/paintwork, it will be a hurdle to get over and done with. , tintop !

These big gaps are a big problem. When I was welding up the frame I had the front fenders attached at only a few points. I thought that was good enough to make sure the frame was such that the panel gaps would be good. I was wrong. The gaps were fine at the top but way too wide at the bottom. The only good news was I had the same problem on both sides which gives me a little comfort that the frame is at least straight. Even with this alignment problem, the body line still looks okay.

 

So...I cut the rear edge of each fender from the bottom all the way up to the top body line. I'm now in the process of filling in the gap. Not pretty but I think the gap will look a lot better.

 

I also had to make new splash shields since the old ones wouldn't work after I pushed the firewall back.

This is a good option for cars with decent outer bodies but the floor or unibody is crap. Buddy has a '60 Falcon that would be perfect for it. It looks great on the outside but the rearend is falling out of it, it's so bad underneath.

 

Before and after. Still some adjusting to do but I think it will look okay.

Hey Nash , I spent the extra effort on my 66 Chevelle wheel openings , I know how much work it is to do , u will be stoked when u get yours spot on , it is worth the extra effort , mine is ready to paint now , so we are going finish soon eh ! 66Tintop

 

May be a question that you already answered but,are you going to finish/reinforce the wheel openings? ROY.

 

It's hard to tell from the photos but the edges of the wheel openings are 3/16 steel rod - very rigid.

street legal race cars---gotta love'em

l and a few friends have and/or are doing this kind of build.

one has a 2 seat sprint car and the other has a old 1970 sprint car that has been on the street since 1982.

mine's in the build stage, a 1948 mopar dirt style circle track car out out a retired chassis.

I saw your mock up of the '48 on the Vintage Stockcars for the Street thread. That's going to be a cool ride. In hindsight, I wish I had started with a race chassis and built from there. It would have saved a ton of time. Good looking Ranchero in background by the way.
