It looks like that canvas stuff they use on boats/military vehicles.

We wen´t oslo-england-barcelona-oslo in a 65 Chevelle last summer vacation on a mini 3700 miles road trip. Had a blast !
The car was a real budget build with total cost incl vehicle purchase 4000 dollars.

 

Why the fabric trunk lid ( boot ) instead of the metal one?

 

"I don't know why you would drive a flathead ,they over heat, are unreliable,they crack" blah blah fucking blah..just goes to show all those ass clowns who rip out flatheads for the reasons I just stated,dont know a damn thing about what they are talking about.Same goes for all the heros who proceed to tell us that flatheads are junk.Stick it in your ass SBC guys,this is a true engine,taking a beating and keeps on going.What a great story and an even greater engine!

 

Yep, engine, interior, boot cover and finish the last 1/4 of the build.
The story. Mike and Michelle originaly came to us to build an engine for the Rally. The rules state that the engine had to be pre 41 for his class which includes the speed equipment with exceptions on the ignition and charging system.
Engine spec :- 39 Mercury block
3 5/16 x 4 1/8 (kept bore size down to help on heating issues)
1.6 valves
Custom grind cam with .410 lift
Ord heads and intake (limited on choice due to being pre 41)
Fully ported,polished and gasket matched
Pertronix ignition with Msd adjustable retard box. Fitted to adjust for poor fuel
Powergen dynamo

During the engine build M and M saw Julie's interior work and she got the job to do the full interior, not just a stripped down racing interior. But a full custom diamond stitched leather interior as the car is going to be a daily driver once back from the rally including fitting the bench seat back in.
Also M and M wanted a fabric boot cover made which installed making a frame work mimicing the original shape (what a bitch of a job that was) then covered in a material called everflex which is used for making tonneau covers on old British sport cars. The reason for this was to save wait as in the boot lies a 40 gallon fuel tank (need a 500 mile range for the rally)

We were supposed to get the car in a finished state only needing to fit the interior from the specialist rally company that started the build. Unfortunately this wasn't quite the case.
After about another 2 months sorting out odds and sods the car was finished and ready to get some miles on it before being shipped to China. M and M managed to get 2000 miles on the car in about 4 weeks then it came back for a final check up and 2 day tuition for M and M on all the ins and outs on the car.
Then off it went.....and the fun began..

 

You damn right, Flatheads always run hot, crack etc etc etc. Could never run in 40 degrees heat, averaging 55 mph for 10 hours a day..

That's true ,all the parts are at autozone.now that's tradition!

 

Yeah but you can get SBC parts anywhere, because, you know if you're on a trip and your SBC throws a rod you can just get a new rod at autozone and fix it yourself in 10 minutes

Well done indeed, that's quite an accomplishment in any car let alone one that is pretty much 73 years old.

Its only $60,000.00 entry fee, and you have the opportunity to win a magnum of champagne.. I wouldn't give a damn about winning,,just completing the journey would be a great accomplishment considering the terrain. There are plenty of blogs describing how treacherous some of the route is..
