Projects I finally get to change my signature: Grant Rebel SST funny car!

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Don Moyer, Jul 1, 2013.

  1. Ever since I put a signature on the the HAMB it has stated I was looking for an AMC funny car with history. All along I really wanted was this one. I thank you all for the leads that I have gotten through the years (another one coming because of the HAMB) but my main focus has finally been realized after 17 years of trying! On Friday the original 1968 Grant Rebel SST body was delivered to me by its previous owner, Gary. I have owned the original AMC/Grant nitro motor for years so it will be a enjoyable challenge to restore this piece of AMC racing history. I know that this may not fit in the parameters or scope of the HAMB and will understand if the moderators choose to close this thread. The build will not start right away save for the research needed to do my best to accuratly restore this AMC icon. Any information I get would be greatly appreciated!

Nice find. Did you happen to also get lucky enough to get the chassis too?

a real funny car when you could Identify the car by the body , not a vinyl wrap and a aftermarket engine !!

  17. It's cool when a plan starts coming together.....

    Good luck with the restoration!

    Congrats.
    I love AMC's also. I've had 68 AMX, 390 auto, 2 68 Javelins both 290 4 spd, 1 69 Javelin 343 auto, 72 Ambassador 360 auto, 64 Ambassador Station wagon w/327 stanard/w /o.d..
Always wanted to paint a Javelin or AMX red white and blue.
I'll probaly get another Javelin or AMX before I die...next on my list.

Wow, very nice. Persistence pays off!! That had to be an exciting drive home with the racer on the trailer.

    Good luck with the restoration.

This is just too cool! I really hope your build is allowed to take place here on the H.A.M.B. I was an AMO member right after I graduated high school. I had a ’72 Javelin that I sold when I went into the Army….man, I should have kept that car. I really have a soft spot for anything AMC. Funny cars were so much more interesting when they really looked like the car they were modeled after. Not like today’s streamliners with vinyl headlights and taillights stuck on.

That's just fantastic! You're a man of great patience and as it turns out, of great luck too! Can't wait to see this come back to life.

    AWESOME!!
Don't be shy about displaying that body as-is at vintage races... make a little sign board for it to set out in front with the history of the car all the way up to how it got there on your trailer.
Display the engine with it if you can transport it easily.

Seeing restored cars is always nice, but seeing unrestored pieces is a treat too. I think people would really enjoy seeing it as-is until you can get the restoration underway.

Good to see AMC getting some love. I started my career at AMC engineering in 1972. We had a "rebel machine" to do our bump test for our rear axels. I'll be watching your build good luck.
