how do you represent the HAMB ideals?

I think he was using "Mopar guy" to mean the specific person he encountered, not ALL guys that own Mopars.

That`s why I said the "majority" when describing the HAMB forum.
I too have been the recipient of some sharp tongued members if my ideas don`t line up with their opinions as noted above in this thread but I try not to take it personally as that is the price you pay for the information acquired on this forum.
There are some great guys here and I`ve made several friends over the time I`ve spent here.

Hey Dane!I`m not some wet behind the ears car guy just starting out and have built cars & trucks for years having several published in mags so I`m not a rookie at this hobby. I do my own fabricating, painting (when applicable), wiring and see a build through faster and more complete than most.I really don`t care how dirty your fingernails are... It didn`t have shit to do with the guy having a Mopar and I used to have a 1970 Cuda myself.

Maybe after 40 years of car stuff I`m finally to the point of not tolerating someone that buys over building their own and then has the nerve to critique my ride.
Remember, I didn`t get testy until after he stated he wasn`t into my type of ride. Rant over.

I told a guy once that my 58 beater VW shifted just like his Ferrari.

Sometimes the guy who does not respond may be deaf or hard of hearing. I am and people do take offence and think it is arrogance, when in reality I simply haven't heard them or understood them.

I have had a lot of fun parking next to shiny painted cars with my rusty Willys gasser. Not a lick of paint on it. It has been called everything under the sun from rodent to übercool and on more than one occasion I have had owners move their car when I parked next to them. I tell them the rust is highly contagious. Why should I let somebody else's attitude or opinion spoil my day - that is theirs to enjoy and I am sure as hell not going to let it rain on my parade....

 

I think tfeverfred's signature line says it all - not everybody gets the traditional old car thing.
Don't sweat it, and don't stress about the guys that haven't busted their knuckles - some of them pay some of the guys on this forum enough so they can afford to live. Not everyone has 50 years experience building cars - celebrate those guys who do, and are willing to share it on some awesome build threads.
Just enjoy the cars, whatever flavour you like.

You are very wrong. Unless Ryan has personally and specifically asked you to represent the HAMB out in the world.....has he? If he had, he would have given you a set of instructions on what to do or not do.

In addition, the HAMB has never been so diverse, or fractured. The stuff that gets posted now would NEVER have been embraced in the past on this board.

Are you representing the ZZZZZd frame laying stretched engine bay tires higher than the roof clear over rust non dust washing fake signage sailor jerry bottle tattooed for unknow reason johnny cash quoting HAMB? Or the dropped axle, spring behind, 38 trans 3x2 flathead torque tube bias ply 5 window HAMB? The do what you want HAMB? The overseas HAMB? The Texas HAMB?

In the end, you represent yourself. Period. And as you see, no matter how well you view yourself, others will view you differently. You set yourself up for that with your initial rant.

 

Spot on. I think that's part of where the problem comes from; there is no real consensus to what "traditional" even means. Traditionalist take and attempt to recreate something that could have existed decades ago, but only based on what they themselves have learned about the era. Often the consensus amongst the purists is false or embellished. That's not to say that it isn't valid, but it's kind of a stretch to flaunt your knowledge of a bygone era that you didn't live in...but many do.
Simply put rods and Kustoms of those bygone times were a lot more diverse than what is the common consensus here. Do your research and you will see.
That being said, what I would think of as the HAMB ideals would include promoting the traditionally inspired hot rods. That's about it. This whole idea that you have to be a warrior for the cause and turn your nose up to everyone that isn't one of the chosen few who are lucky enough to have a period correct hot rod is absurd. You can represent the cars without disrespecting anyone else and what THEY want to drive.
And I'll say it again; rat rod is a traditional term in the sense that it's been around since the period where traditionalists take their inspiration. A rat rod was usually a work in progress, or simply an unpainted hot rod. Upon it's conception as a label it had nothing to do with the modern, low slung, big wheel, floorless crap box movement.
OP, by a lot of old timer's eyes your truck would be a rat rod because it doesn't have paint. You can take that as an insult if you want, but it's really not meant to be.
Maybe instead of getting all bent out of shape over the use of the term rat rod we need to invent a new label for the shit box "rat rods" of today.

 

It is hard to comprehend that so many "car guys that get it" despise those who have a newer vehicle. Not everyone can or wants to build their own hot rod. This does not mean they do not have the right to own a nice car and show it off. Nothing personal, but I'd walk right by the OP's vehicle to look at a couple nice Road Runners.

I just don't get the 'buy a car off the showroom floor' or late model that you see on any street and take it to a car show mentality any more than I get the 'PT Cruiser with every dingleberry and doodad known to man hanging off it is a 'show car'....

 

I accept everyone. I've had everyone from guys with 12' challengers to a bone stock model T say they think my cars cool.
I also got dirty looks of hatred and distaste from the Cadillac restorers club when I accidentally crashed their meet at Woodward.

I smile, shake hands and let people know WHY & HOW I do things. If they listen, cool. If not, then are they someone who we want in our style of car madness anyhow?

People call my car a "rat rod" all the time. Do I correct them? no, if they said that to begin with then we are on two separate planes when it comes to aesthetics.

Neither them, nor I is going to gain anything from that conversation. . . so I just politely steer the conversation in another direction.

It just irks me that they've repurposed a word and made everyone hate it. Yeah, it's always been slightly depreciative, but it's not a downright insult. Or at least it wasn't until the last decade or so.

This past Saturday, I attended a gathering of old cars for a Fathers Day meet. Being a friend and supporter of the host club, I got there early to set up. Everything was going great, until a few newer cars and trucks showed up. Some of the cars and trucks were slightly modified with the typical 24" rims and rubber band tires. We had to escort them to the spectator parking. Most complied, but a few got angry and did a burn out as they left. It amazes me that it's done in the first place. I understand the pride they have in their cars and that's great, but if it's an event advertised for older cars, why even try it?

To each his own in my opinion. I like what I like and let the next guy or gal do the same. I can appreciate the work that goes into waxing and polishing and going for the trophies, been there done that. I as well care very little about recognition, trophies or even an honorable mention nowadays. I would much rather be stopped by someone who wants to know about what it took to bring my car together. My experience so far on the HAMB has been great. Every single question I have asked, has been answered to my satisfaction and every PM with a specific question has been met with a prompt and courteous answer. That in my opinion is the proper way to represent the ideal. Be helpful and live and let live...

Two things, once at a big show a fella and his girl looked at my T while he explained to her how easy they were to build right out of the box, yes I ignored him, you can't teach someone who already knows it all.
My 36 has been flat black with moon discs for near twenty years now, fairly unusual then, very common now, no matter, its still my truck, there's not another like it, call it a rat rod if you are uneducated, your ignorance shows through.
I take pride in the fact that my stuff is built by me, I never took a second on my house to buy them, the guy who does is new to the hobby, making his mark, let him.
Not worth getting irritated by the uninformed, you'll know the guy who likes your truck when you see him looking under it with a camera in hand, enjoy talking with him, let the rest of it go.

 

i try to attend a car show when the proceeds go towards a good cause. some local churches have fund raisers that i try to attend. the black top barons donate the proceeds to the mda. i pass on all the rest.

First & best response. I do shows every week and it's hard to realise folks are never gonna get the finer points 'coz those finer points only exist in the old head. We're dinosaurs.

There is really no right or wrong to a situation like that. I myself spent a couple of years as a trophy whore, way back when. Entered every show I could with a vehicle detailed as well as I could. I won a lot of trophies - the great so what; they're collecting dust on a shelf in the garage.

You can try to find something good to say about any bike, car or truck you come across. But some really are junk (thinking of one mega-dollar monster truck wannabe that had a lot of chrome and equally scary 'engineering'), and some owners really are jerks.

Now I concentrate on vehicles I can hose off inside and out, or just leave in the rain. The older I get, the better that strategy is working for me.

I'll still drive whatever I feel like driving to a local show, reasonably clean but not minted out. I'll enter it as a non-judged vehicle because then I can park inside - better than being out in the lot - making it easy to stash whatever I find from the cheap tool guy or other vendors.
