This was taken in 1958 in North Vancouver by Fred Herzog, a local photographer who was highly skilled at capturing the atmosphere of his time through his photographs (usually in Kodachrome, this would be an exception). I thought it fit in with the theme of this thread, would have been nice to find a bigger image though.

I would highly recommend looking him up.

  4. Well this thread doesnt help my thought process for the next car

A friend I work with has driven this as his daily for the past 20 years. He hit a deer and has been fixing it for the past month so it is back on the road again.

I love those period pics. So awesome, and a big "in your face" for anyone claiming that back then all cars were shiny and in best possible condition.

Love the green patina doors exploding against the creamy wheels.

From the LA Public Library: Caption: A dog is sleeping on a littered dirt sidewalk next to a very old car parked on Estrada Street in Boyle Heights. Dated 1938. Gow job is pretty ragged, but cool...wonder if it was updated with an A engine and transmission, as there is a floor shift lever...also wonder how that steering wheel worked???

Really good proportions for such a jalopy! Think those are Model A 19" wheels?

Having lived my whole life in Southern California, when I see the word "jalopies" my first thought has always been oval track jalopy racing. Not salt flats, not street cars. Nothing else. Strictly oval. That was my exposure since the 1950s. I've never heard the term jalopies used to describe any other class of car in So Cal.
