I have a 64 nova straight axle car and im looking at exhaust options.. Motor is a high compression 327 with a 4 speed. Cam @ 50 228 int 234 exh lobe center 106.Im currently running hooker fenderwell headers with some cheap blackjack mufflers and they suck.. My ehaust systm will be exposed so Im looking at polished stainless mufflers. What do you guys think?? Im open to any type of muffler...
So you don't have the mufflers in the traditional location there before the rear end correct? Loud? Quieter? Most of the "bullet" style muffler all sound the same, just better workmanship and material selection are what separates them. Something like: http://www.jegs.com/i/Kooks-Custom-Headers/579/R250-14/10002/-1?parentProductId=2127510 Kooks makes awesome stuff. Very high quality and 304 is what you would want in a stainless muffler
Mufflers are connected straight to the headers and thats it.. I want loud! I was thinking collector, muffler, and exhaust pipe kicking out the side of the car. I like the look and style of purple horney jut not a hugh fan of the glasspack style muffler.. I never heard kooks in person but People speak highly about them.. I was also looking at magnaflow magnapacks.
"Bullets" don't really have the popping sound I think of associated with traditional glasspacks especially coming off the throttle. Still loud, a little bit like flapping paper at idle, definitely need a decent motor to sound good which it sounds like you have. Skip to 1:50 unless you like long intros http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWniX6r9n54 355, dynomax bullets . . . sounds about like every built engine sounds like through bullets. Motor sounds a little lazy on the throttle but could just be the guy moving the cable. I've heard the kooks bullets in person and they sound about the same, don't have a video and it was on a OT foxbody mustang.
I'm running stainless steel mufflers from Stainless Specialties in Tennessee on my 27. Mine are over 25 years old and they polish up like new when I get the urge to do them. They have various sizes and sound levels and are extremely nice looking. I have the bullet shaped ones on mine. http://stainless-specialties.com/products/mufflers.html Don
The exhaust setup is simimlar to what im wanting to do just not so much tailpipe. Its just so hard to get a good sound from the web but the car sounded healthy. OH I hate long intros HAHA...
On my Falcon I had fenderwell headers w/ pipe going to Purple Hornies. (painted flat black) They ended about 12" past the back of the door , away from my ear. With a fairly stout 351C it sounded great, plenty loud but not annoying.
Not all glasspacks sound them same. I love Thrush Magnum glasspacks, they have a nice throaty roar that doesn't have that Cherrybomb "popping" noise...
Space is very limited. I have subframe connectors on the car and they dont leave much room. It looks like the only style that is going to fit will be a bullet style or maybe a small one chamber muffler.
If you want loud, then pipe your system out the side of the collector, and that way you can uncap when you want really loud, and cap up when you are driving a long distance. Could also go electric cutouts to instantly switch from loud to quiet. Here's mine that I built on my BBC Falcon project. Full length out the back with Flowmasters, and 2.5" tailpipes:
These work well. No muffler needed if you want a little noisy. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Collector-H...Parts_Accessories&hash=item35c5de067c&vxp=mtr
Man, and here I was thinking that looked just like they used to back in the late sixties/early seventies...
Porters come in custom lengths now and in stainless, look good and sound great. Steel packs with a spring holding all together so they will not blow out. Matt
My vote is for purple horny's- I put them on my 54 and used Heddman headers with the "ball and socket" flange. Header flange and bolts are tacked in place making it easy to drop them off at the track. They have a good sound and sound even better with 110 in the tank
That looks cool. Just get some straight pipe w/ 1-90 cut in half to make cheap$$ 45's, from the local auto parts. Get some 3". Exit at the rear door jams. NO MUFFLER Nor Insert.
