Solid axle, with or without holes

The So- Cal axles are pretty beefy too. I used a mag based drill on my steel fab table with a 1 1/8" annular hole cutting bit.

Worked very well.

 

I'm waiting to see someone spot face an axle instead of drilling right through it.
Dimples instead of holes, anyone?

 

SoCal is a very nice axle. I bought one and drilled it myself. They drill very easy.

 

Everybody likes a good looking hole. Easy choice with or without fenders.

 

250 plain, add 150 to have it drilled. I got mine unused and never installed off Ebay from one who had a plan change for 200 and an honest shipping cost. If I was running fenderless I'd haul it over to my buddy's place and have him put some holes in it on his mill but it would be a pain in the butt to drill it by hand even with my so so drill press.

I thought pretty seriously about sending the Model A axle that I have had for the past 25 Plus years off to be dropped and splitting the bones that are on it but decided that for this build I'd buy the SoCal axle and save the A axle back for another project. Finding a deal on it vs paying 250 to have mine dropped plus shipping both ways and maybe having worn king pin holes was one reason for doing it this way.

 

What about water jet? You could make the holes shaped like bow ties or Ford ovals etc? Not cheap though I would expect. Mark L

Ovals - yes. The bow ties would be stress risers

 

I'm sure this will get comments... but I picked up the new speedway forged axle with holes. The axle is very beefy (Huge) compared to super-bell. It is bit pricey though.

 

I'd study up on hydrogen embrittlement before putting a chromed suspension part under my car.

 

The chroming process has come a long way. Back in the day yes but today not so much.

 

WHEN!? They've been on back order for 3 months. I'm on the list to get one.

Holes are way over done.. Build it like you're poor....

It's your car, do what you want...but since you asked, I don't remember any drilled axles on street-driven hot rods in the '50s, so for those who really want tradition, no holes (yes, I'm sure someone did drill street axles, but just saying I don't remember any, or seen any in Don Montgomery's books)

 

This is what I did on my avatar '32. The axles with holes are too expensive. It only took an hour or so in the mill. I've even drilled Ford axles on my drill press at home. Laying out the holes is the hardest part and even that is easy.
